In terms of driving distance, El Paso is almost 600 miles west of Austin, making it one of the isolated cities in Texas relative to its capital. My question is whether you think it would make sense for El Paso to be in New Mexico. Is it closer culturally to southern NM than the rest of Texas? It is relatively close to Las Cruces and Alamagordo, but far from any significant Texas cities. It's about 320 miles from Santa Fe, so still quite a distance, but much closer than Austin.

Eh, NM should be in Texas, as it originally was .

But, in reality, a rather silly question, as it isn't going to happen.

El Paso, New Mexico? Doesn't sound as good as El Paso, Texas.

I've been gone from there a few years, but yes, it was definitely more like southern New Mexico (and Northern Mexico) than Texas.

We used to laugh about how, when a map of the state of Texas was shown on TV, El Paso was usually cropped right off .

El Paso is closer culturally to New Mexico and they are in the same time zone too! (Mountain time). But El Paso is an important part of Texas and it isn't going anywhere!

Ya,I kind of wish Little Texas belonged to us so we could have Eddy and Lea Counties for more tax revenue. However it aint ever goin happen.I do agree with the OP that El Paso has more in common with Cruces and Alamogordo,New Mexico in terms of culture. It would be nice if New Mexico belonged to us but oh well.
