Houston is part of Southeast Texas, yes. But is it really in the Southern part of Texas? To me it seems closer to the North

North? No. It’s further up along the Texas Gulf Coast, but that’s about it.

I just took another LOOK at a map of the cities in Texas. Trying to "see" how you would arrive at your conclusion. If you drew a horizontal line across Texas from El Paso on the west thru Waco to the Louisiana border you would clearly see Houston is "well" into the Southern half of Texas

The "line" I referred to is "pretty much" cutting the state in half as you look at a map of Texas from the "top" North, to the South, the "bottom" half. IMHO.

As a lifelong Texan whose ancestors actually helped found Houston, yes, it is definitely in the southern part of the state. No question about it.

When you say north, are you referring to north Texas or the north as in a northern US city.

Maybe he's not talking about direction with his last reference to north.

I thought I reread my post. Of course I meant "from El Paso on to the EAST thru Waco..."

The ways people describe the geography of Texas aren't literal. Houston is considered SE Texas. South Texas is from San Antonio to the valley. North Texas is generally the area along the red River. West Texas can mean either the panhandle and areas west of San Antonio or just the areas west of San Antonio. That one seems to carry by individual.

I'm only a 5th generation Texan, so I know nothing.

Except that Houston ain't South Texas. Maybe once it was. Maybe when your ancestors surveyed Buffalo Bayou, this area was considered "south". But in the vernacular of 20th Century Texas, Houston. Isn't. South. Texas.

This is it, nail on the head (the part I bolded). South Texas is not a geographical line, it's a cultural part of the state. And it's the Valley, up to some vague point. Maybe San Antonio. But sure as heck not Houston.

Houston is SE Texas. Or the Upper Gulf Coast. Or a number of other descriptions (Texas is wacky with "areas"). But not South.
