Hey y'all!

I was hoping I could get some recommendations on good places to camp and fish. We went to a state park yesterday and we could literally see the highway running alongside it...so we are hoping for something a bit more secluded. We live in Austin, but anywhere in the surrounding areas is fine!

Most state parks are not near highways. I've never been to one that was. They really are the best places in Texas for camping and fishing. Look at Colorado Bend SP in the Hill Country. It's quite remote!

Also there are many great camping and fishing places in south Texas along the Frio river - including state parks.

Most of the lakes in Central Texas are managed/operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In the Temple and Belton areas, they manage Belton Lake, and Stillhouse Hollow. Both of these lakes have RV and tent camping areas, and offer great fishing. Belton Lake is good for hybrid bass, largemouth bass, white bass, and catfish. Stillhouse has stripers, a healthy smallmouth bass population, largemouth bass, and catfish too.

On Belton lake camping areas include Westcliff Park, Live Oak Ridge, Cedar Ridge, White Flint, and Leona parks. On Stillhouse Hollow, Dana Peak, and Union Grove are the two primary parks with camping.

One of my favorite parks for taking the kids to fish/hike is Inks Lake SP. It isn't exactly 'great fishing', but you can catch fish and the kids don't really care how big or what kind. The hiking is great and the campground is fairly well 'groomed', so we have not had much trouble in the way of chiggers or even mosquitoes. It also does not seem to attract the rowdy or drinking crowd. There is a little store there, as well.

Did you go to McKinney Falls SP? That is very close to the highway and DOES tend to get the party crowd (making it doubly noisy). Guadalupe River SP is close and can be nice if you avoid the most crowded weekends. There are a ton of others withing a couple hours of Austin. If you are going to go several times in a year, get an annual park pass.

I'll definitely check out Inks Lake! We did go to McKinney Falls, it's beautiful, but yeah definitely a lot of drinking crowd type people. Thank you so much for the suggestions. Have you ever been to Sam Houston national forest?? I'm interested in that as well.

It has been some years, but yes, I have been out there. I love the piney woods. Used to go fishing with my dad out on Lake Livingston, too, and it was a good bass fishing lake, iirc.

Having lived here for some 50 odd plus years, I have been to most of them at one time or another .

Toledo Bend Reservoir, along the Texas-Louisiana border is one of the premier bass fishing lakes in the country.

It runs along the Sabine National Forest
