I drive Midland < - > Dallas every 1-2 weeks and often cut it very close on the weekends and it's on average a 4.5 hour drive.

How often does this route encounter trouble in the winter months?

Almost never. The only issue would be an ice storm, which maybe happens 1-2 times a year. We didn’t have any of them last year.

I would assume ice would be more of an issue and that would be further west away from DFW as you gain quite a bit of elevation. DFW doesn't get ice or snow every year or even every couple years. It's just random this far East and at this altitude. West Texas is quite a bit higher in elevation and has more cold weather than in DFW.

Ice storm, once or twice in a normal year. Not drivable.

east of midland can get real bad.Abilene gets more moisture and it has similar temps to Midland and Abilene has kind of a oklahoma influence in its climate and ive heard it can get real bad at times but not too often.maybe a few ice storms but ive been in horrible ice storms in midland too.....i would go real slow and allow plenty of time or better yet dont be on the road.

Thinking about driving from LA to dallas, the entire corridor does not get snow, but if it does, its rare, yes there can be snow but real winter snow is rare since texas is south usa.

I live in Abilene and travel I-20 often, it has closed before but it is very rare. If it is snowing or Ice I try to stay off of it not because it cant be driven but because there are some really horrible drivers out there and I have seen so many accidents on that stretch it is mind boggling.

One year two 18 wheelers stopped right in the middle of the highway blocking both lanes during a snow storm in Tye tx, the drivers where inside a nearby restaurant waiting out the snow storm even though the highway was still drive-able. I had to drive through a snow filled bar ditch to continue my trip.

I wouldn't worry about it to much.
