What we are concerned about is the fact that we are not White and also not Christian (we are actually pretty conservative, though we define that as refraining from alcohol, gambling, etc.). We don't worry for ourselves (other than the fact my husband currently owns an orange truck) but are curious if our child may be bullied and/or otherwise mistreated for these identities. Now, when I say "bullied" I mean actually physically harmed and/or emotionally harassed in an extreme way. I know that all sorts of people live everywhere--I am talking about mistreatment unlike what we are likely to see in our current environment, where we are never stared at for how we look and are unafraid to share our religious identities with people.

We have lived in many parts of the country (currently in California) but never in Texas. It seems like every time I look at the news, there is another story from Texas about a person of color being killed or severely beaten. Any perspective from people who know the area would be much appreciated!!

Oh, and my "name" is meant to be a joke--I am a Dr. but pretty much the opposite of a Snob (another reason why the supposed friendliness of College Station seems appealing to us)...
I'm not even going to touch your statement that "EVERY TIME you look at the news, there is another story about a person of color being killed or severely beaten [because of their race]" because that statement is just false. Unless you only watch the news once every few years....

College Station ISD is just over 50% white. It's 22% Hispanic, 14% black, 8% Asian, and 2% multi racial. Your child is in good company! Bryan ISD (lower academic quality) is even more diverse. Plus, as pp's have stated a major research university is in College Station so that draws a relatively diverse professor and faculty population.

Most people in College Station go to church but you're probably more "conservative" than 80% of them if you don't drink alcohol. I'd be prepared for a few people to ask where you're going to church or to invite your kid to a youth activity at their church (Vacation Bible School or similar), but keep in mind it's more rooted in friendliness than conversion.

Well, I'm Asian (Chinese) and I live in Midland (where it's maybe 1-2% Asian) and the only time I was threatened for my ethnicity here was, ironically, by another Asian person (very long story.)

I watch the news almost every single day. People are not regularly beaten or murdered because of their race in Texas. I'm black; there is only one part of Texas that black people tend to avoid for safety reasons, and College Station is not in it.

Note that the OP never returned to comment. I am guessing the truths we told her didn't reinforce her pre-existing stereotype.

The reason why the media reports on things is because they don't happen frequently.

I wouldn't worry about College Station.

I think that ragnarkar's comment is the kind that i would rely on, rather than people (like me) who might project what they expect on what somebody else might experience, based on their own life experience somewhere else.

However, if I were to do the latter (which I just criticized) I would be optimistic , especially about a place like College Station. One can find creepy people almost anywhere, but most people here judge people as individuals, at least as long as they are not wearing giant chips on their shoulders.

I'm an old, white, anglo guy in Houston who has friends mostly who don't fall into my category. Most seem to get along fine. Now that I'm an old guy, I will admit that I kinda love them. A few have minor adjustment issues that may be due to their own insecurities. A very few, perhaps, have been more troubled. But ... I think the same thing could be said for any human being who decides to settle somewhere away from where they were born.

So ... I'm definitely against people being jerks. But, in order for us to people happy, we all have to be thick-skinned enough to put up with the (hopefully few) jerks we will encounter in life.

If I were to retire somewhere in SE Asia, I know that I would have to deploy a thick skin also. It's not that people there are any different; it's just how people are. Mostly good, even wonderful ... but one has to be able to accept running into the alternatives, also.
