Hi all!! My husband, 6 year old daughter, and I are thinking of relocating to either Texas or Arizona. We have horses and love to ride. We are looking at buying property with a house and some land land prices are about the same in both places. My husband has worked in the oil field so possibly looking for that type of work again. Where would you recommend we look at for homes?

What does your husband do for a job in the oil field? I think Texas is better than Arizona when it comes to jobs for that, but maybe that is just for land positions.

IMO Midland is the oil mecca of Texas, Houston and Dallas Fort Worth area have jobs too, but Midland is also the ideal place for Western living, especially compared to those two huge metros. Some of the cheapest land to be had is in Midland, they have cool historical museums and stuff for Texas and ranching history and almost everybody you meet is either going to be a rancher or oil worker or the child of one. The only downside is it's far from Dallas/Houston/Austin/San Antonio but if you are only gonna go on occasion it's not a big deal.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Look at either Abilene, Wichita Falls, or Lubbock. All have plenty of oil field work and decently cheap land. Midland is the oil Mecca but can be a pretty rough town for someone with young children. Lots of gang and drug problems.

Maybe so, but Midland's crime rate is WAAAAY lower than any of those three.

Would probably prefer Abilene or Wichita Falls though just cause they are closer to bigger cities

I would recommend Abilene. It is closer to horse activities and is a better town for families. Look for the job before deciding where to live.

Wichita Falls has issues with water supply and droughts, and there aren’t as many oilfield jobs.

I love Abilene but I am in the oil industry and i dont know where the closest drilling is to there. The Cline was really hyped in that area but it did not pan out.Maybe Angelo but Midessa would be your best bet for oil and western life.I guess if you lived in Lubbock Angelo or Abilene your hubbie could commute to his work sites.....is he white collar or blue collar? What is yalls budget?Lubbock has a horrible climate so i would not want to live there but its the biggest town.Midland is a long way from the big cities but theres always Southwest.Lene Town and Angelo are closer to the big cities.

Just curious why you say Lubbock has a horrible climate? I went to school out there and loved it. It gets hot but never really humid. The wind can be a little much at times but you get used to it.

I was wondering that, too. May have been one of my posts in the Lubbock forum. Gets an undeserved bad rap from some.

haboobs.i was there a week ago and i am still recovering lol.I prefer Angelo's climate.I love scorching hot weather.Lubbock was voted by viewers of the weather channel as having the worst climate in the country a few years ago.I am thinking of moving there but its still up in the air.I also like Da Lene's climate climate.the wind is too much for me.

I love Angelo’s climate as well, but it’s actually not that different than Lubbock. Neither have the high humidity that plagues much of the rest of the state. Fall weather is fantastic in Lubbock, as the evenings cool off due to the elevation. Don’t let the stories of dust storms dissuade you. They happen maybe 2-3 times per year and usually last no more than a few hours. People way overdramatize their actual impact.🙄
