I know Texas is a large state with several mid size to large cities scattered across. But the violent crime rate in alot of them tend to be very low. However a few have had years or time periods where they were just as dangerous as any other city in the country.

I guess you have the big 5.

Dallas
Houston
San Antonio
Fort Worth
Austin

Out of these cities which was more dangerous at their peaks( im guessing this would be in the 80s or 90s)

I'm guessing that anyone really trying to find the answer to that question could do so by googling crime statistics for various Texas cities. Have you tried that?

Without looking at any data, I would guess:

Big 5:

Houston
Dallas
San Antonio
Ft Worth
Austin

Overall per capita, (cities over 100,000):

Odessa
Corpus Christi
Beaumont
Houston
Amarillo
Killeen
Waco
Dallas
San Antonio
Lubbock

Just my guess without doing research.

It's funny, I don't see any border towns in the "per capita" list. Kind of tells you something.

I read that Odessa had the highest homicide rate in the 80's during the bust....i dont know about the 90's in Odessa even though i live nearby.I didnt follow the news back then but Odessa can still be pretty dangerous. It seems like theres stories of violence in Odessa everytime i turn on the news.

The violence in border towns is on the Mexico side.

I saw this thread and was thinking Galveston for hurricanes.
Then I saw this was targeting crime.

I'd have to say Houston, too. Most that cross the border want to come to Houston. Houston comes first in the nation for sex trafficking crime. Now that isn't to say Houston isn't safe - It just means it's a big city. 4th largest in the nation. Crime is actually higher than statistics show because some murders or crimes get shoved into other categories like fire. There was a segment on the news about that a few years ago, that crime data is off because not all crimes are reported - Hoping to shine a better light on the city.

That was my point, so maybe the border towns are not as crime ridden as some people think. Yes, there is crime but there is much more in towns like Houston or Dallas. San Antonio has a very high crime rate in certain areas.

The border towns are pretty safe. I think El Paso is consistently one of the safest cities of it's size.

The thing about crime is it is always very localized. So it's kind of irrelevant which city has the worst crime. Don't go looking for drugs in the bad areas and chances are excellent you'll be fine.
