That dude is living in fantasy land (insert Austin joke here) if he thinks

1). The non-autonomous car is "dead".

2). 80% of cars will be electric in 10 years.

I had a laugh at that too. I commend the young lad on his pursuit of noble ideals, but the last part of his piece seems to venture into fantasy-land.

OP: are you dead set on the south? You might travel to cities like Portland, OR and Minneapolis, MN to see what a serious commitment to bike infrastructure looks like. I'm originally from the latter and when we visit I'm always amazed at the bike highways, bike bridges, the snow plows for the bike paths, railways converted into major cross town bike paths essentially 'underneath' the city... it all adds up to an impressive community of people who embrace alternative forms of transportation. MPLS also has a solid light rail system now. I believe Portland does too, though I haven't been up there in some years. Of course, both have poor weather in my opinion! Cold in MN, and gray and rain in OR.

None are really that great, but if you're set on moving to TX, Dallas and Austin are your best bets:

Walkable neighborhoods & public transit = Dallas
Bike-friendly = Austin

Overall, I'd pick anywhere else if bike friendliness, walkability, and public transit are important to you.

For sure. It is possible but challenging to go carless in Dallas. But certainly not for $900 a month. You'd need at least 2 roommates to make that happen.

I'd imagine a similar scenario in Austin.

Could OP live in a smaller city (non Top 5 city in Texas) without a car for $900 a month. The $900 a month party in a non Top 5 city is possible but the carless thing would be more challenging.
