I just came back from a week-long visit to the great state of Texas and couldn't help but notice at least 70% of the people I saw out an about were wearing pants and not shorts in 100+ degree weather, and I'm not talking about professionals who have to because of their job. Can someone explain this to me??? When it's over 85 here in the Northeast, everyone is in shorts.

No idea. Were you out at bars at night? Men can't wear shorts to the bars/clubs at night and expect to be successful in seducing women, especially in places like Dallas and Houston.

Were you seeing people on their way home from work?

I always assumed that many people just aren't comfortable showing their legs. Also, keep in mind that most aren't spending a great deal of time outside. The bulk of their day is spent in one air conditioned space or another.

When its warm outside, it seems to me like most of the people in Austin wear shorts, t-shirts or Hawaiian shirts, flip flops or sandals, and a baseball cap and sun glasses during their leisure time.

When it's cold outside, seems like most people wear t-shirts, blue jean's, tennis shoes, baseball cap, and sun glasses.

There are also quite a few people, myself included, when it's cold outside, wear t-shirts, shorts, tennis or hiking shoes, and a winter coat, usually when they don't have to be outdoors more than a few minutes at a time.

I hardly ever wear long pants unless it is really cold and nasty outside. Even when I was working, I'd wear shorts to work almost everyday.

Austin is probably the most casually dressed city in America that isn't on one of the coasts.

I wear long pants because I want to avoid tanning or showing my hairy legs (or having to shave to prevent that). Another thing is that jeans, skinny jeans or not, actually make my legs feel cooler than wearing shorts since my legs aren't exposed to direct sunlight.

I think it's because the people from Central America get cold if it goes below 90.
