The engineering consulting firms tend to hire a lot when the market is good. But they do mass layoffs when the work dries up, to the point where some of them clear out nearly their entire bench.

That would be ok at this point so long as the money is VERY good.

If you're that good why don't you have a headhunter?

I am starting to question how good I really am lol. I have met with many employment agencies but they dont seem very engaged.

I am honestly not sure what is going on. It would be nice to know one way or another

Either, I got lucky with the last 13 years and I am a schlep and going to struggle (in which case some major life adjustments need to be made such as selling the house to get into a significantly cheaper living arrangement so that I can keep going to school to increase my skill base, etc).
Or something else is going on, not networking correctly, am not engaging the right employment agencies, etc.

Have you tried meeting with a career coach? Some are scams but some are quite useful. Does your alma mater offer career advice to alumni through their career center?

My brother is a chemical engineer for Flint Hills in Corpus Christi , TX and last time I talked to him they were looking for help. Might be worth a call.

OP,

If you are interested in an international engineering consulting company, try Spencer Ogden. They hire domestically and internationally. If your "box" can be opened wide enough, they and other companies like them have placements all over the world that will stretch your abilities, force a new viewpoint, and expose employees to all sorts of different cultures.

Also look at Progressive, WRS,and Petroplan. Yes, my limited google-fu found those three competitors, listed in that order. I listed S.O. first because I am familiar with them, having briefly chased after placement there several years ago.

If you are looking for a place to hire and spend the rest of your career in one place, you undoubtedly will have to leave your current scenery and move to a place full of industry. As you know better than most, the slope is stagnant and not likely to improve in the near future.

Awesome, I have some calls and emails to send out tomorrow before my pedestrain work.

The only place I dont want to go in the middle east, thats a whole other level of heat I just dont think I can do.

The state of Alaska is caught up in political quagmire and the state govt is unwilling to hold oil companies accountable for their paltry production rates and wont increase taxes to market rates (ie north dakota and texas). The level of corruption in Alaska is probably close to that of Soviet Russia.

All the state would have to do is use the political process to modify the leases to mandate a minimum flow rate or else the loose the lease. Then increase the oil tax rates to support alternate industry fostering local start ups (with strings attached that they have to stay local otherwise the entire grant is due plus stiff interest).

Without forcing oil companies to increase production and using a beefed up police force to force them off the lease for non compliance and an increase in taxes to match the lower 48 we are pretty much screwed. They can pack up their stuff but if their stuff is in the way of the new lease holder fines are incured daily and leins placed on the assets. Put in state troopers at the haul road and ports to ensure none of the really good turbo machinery goes out (the junk goes first then they can get the good stuff last) otherwise we keep it all.

Are they building a refinery in Iowa? Lots of jobs, this is exciting. Iowa would be nice too.

There is always a pretty good demand in Corpus because it's got a lot of refining capacity and not a huge population and until recently no local engineering program. Now Eagle Ford and Permian production is mostly all going through Corpus to get refined or barged out. With that change it's exploded in demand. Port is now 5th for total tonnage, Cheniere has an LNG plant constructing, World's largest PET plant under construction, Exxon/Aramco have a new plant going in, and a bunch of splitters have been built and are operating. That's in addition to the six refineries that were already operating. So yeah lots of opportunity.
