On the one hand, it's great. On the other hand it will now be harder to get admitted there. I see the dreams of many upper-middle class Houston kids with outstanding, but not spectacular, scholastic records vanishing before their eyes.

It's only a $3 million anonymous donation, tuition alone is 46k plus living expenses, so it won't displace too many other students

I'm not sure where 3 million came from. The article says Rice "is undertaking a $150 million fundraising campaign to support expanding its scholarship program."

The link won't let me read past where it states the tuition is $46k per year. The $3 million figure is from a related article that I mistakenly assumed was talking about this subject. I think that was about the first U of H Med school class.

So with that said we can't assume that they will reach those fundraising goals either, can we ?

Thank you for clarifying it. Everyone was wondering why you mentioned 3 million when it’s 150 million. University is a multi billionaire and has lots of heavily loaded alumni so it looks like an easily attainable goal.

Is Rice still a four year school? One of my cousins graduated from Rice, don't recall her major, but after graduating she bought an old small hotel in West Texas and converted it in a sort of B&B thing, no rooms alike, high end dining room, etc. We all thought she was nuts, but it turned out to make money.

Don't know what having money has to do with what university one goes to, since those who are already wealthy don't usually end up being super productive types anyway, so if they can get more motivated achievers into the school so much the better. A lot of my family is wealthy, mostly inherited, and most of them do nothing of note with their degrees, except stuff like moving to Santa Fe and pretending to be ' fine artists' or something silly like that.

Rice, while being one of the best universities in Texas, also has a total student population of under 5000. They're VERY selective. Money always helps when people are being selective.

Yes, I know that; I was just posting an opinion on why attending a top rated Uni shouldn't depend on how rich the family is, since many would not use their educations anyway. Schools like Harvard have relatively huge 'legacy' admissions, Daddy donated a library or something, who essentially waste the seats on unproductive types. Iiirc some have over 20% 'legacy' students.
