Crickets....
And where is it required that a region is to be made up of multiple entities? Your post here still does not disprove the point.

Even within extremes, you can still find the commonality.

Yea man, It's like the USA is special, but not that special right?? Forgive us if we take a lot of pride in this not so special state.

Ask a Irishman or Scott if he's British, there all in the "British Isles" after all.

For those that don't know, this is an intangible argument of state pride and uniqueness based on culture, history and topographical area.

A Scot will definitely say he is British. He will get all bent out of shape if you call him English. He realizes that England is a separate country but that Scotland is still a big chunk of Britain. So British he is, English he is not.

Thank you for the ammo.

A Texan will get bent out of shape if you call him a Sooner. So what? Once again, the difference in individual state pride but realizing you are part of something bigger as well.

And yes, the US is special and set apart from every other country. Something to be proud of. And you can be a proud Texan without denigrating other states. If that is what it takes to make you feel special, then you ain't special at all.

An Irishman who is not in a Protestant area of the 6 counties of Ulster will likely punch you if you call him British. Ditto for the vast majority of Scotsmen.

But ignoring that red herring, as well as the idiotic contestation around the definition of a region: the Hill country is a region too. A region can be a single state, multiple states, an area within a state???

To get back on point. People in Tyler may very well consider themselves southern and Texan. People in Brownsville may consider themselves Tejana/o and Texan. People in El Paso may consider themselves Mexican-American and Texan and so on.

Texan identity is not exclusive of a southern one, but not reducible to it either. In the endless pages of this thread, I have not seen any evidence to contradict my claim. Texas is too southern to be southwestern, and too Mexican to be southern, therefore it makes most sense to let it be its own region...

Why can't it simply be a state located in multiple regions?

I don't recall I or anyone else on this thread denigrating any other state. If anything, I sense a little bit animosity from a Georgian who doesn't seem to like Texan pride while living in Texas. We know this is all for fun, so we'll continue this thread until eternity I suppose. But to address one point, I have never heard a Texan ever being referred to as a "Sooner". That is just blasphemy. I know there are a lot people that attend Oklahoma University in North Texas, especially in McKinney, but if they are from or raised in Texas, they are not by any means a Sooner, any more than you are a Georgia Cornhusker.

But I regress...here is a little history as to why Texas is unique:

The Six Flag of Texas
  • Spain: 1519-1685 and again 1690-1821
  • France: 1685-1690
  • Mexico: 1821-1836
  • Republic of Texas: 1836-1845
  • United States of America: 1845-1861 and again 1865 to present
  • Confederate States of America: 1861-1865
All which have contributed to a culture that is uniquely Texan.
