Do not fool yourself. Remember that the GOP likes to use the word "fee" as a substitution for tax.
Texas is not the place to be for individuals if you want lower taxes/fees.

More than half the school tax collected in Austin is redistributed out to rural school districts. Bet you didn't know that. Because it's not part of the conservative narrative fed to you. https://www.kut.org/post/missing-aus...property-taxes

When it comes to taxation, forget party affiliation - ALL of them want more, regardless of what they call it. However, they've done SUCH a good job at dividing us that we fight amongst ourselves rather than focusing our attention where it belongs.

The big savings for us here is two-income family in a single 'modest' house. It completely takes the sting out of property tax when you compare it to income tax. And we are NOT the top 1%.

Many (Most? All?) of those tax comparing algorithms fail to acknowledge federal tax write-offs. Of course, that works both ways, but being able to write off the sales taxes is still nice, and we can currently still write-off 100 percent of our property tax. In CA, you do get to write off income and property tax, but not sales.

And not strictly on the topic of the magnitude of taxes, but the quality of the public schools that are covered by the property taxes is much better, at least compared to most of the areas of CA that we could afford. To get equivalent schools or thereabouts, we would have to buy a more expensive house than ours here and then end up paying those higher property taxes which would make the tax benefit less.
I do not mind paying taxes, but I do not want to be treated like an idiot by the tax authority. The value of paying taxes is as eroded as any poorly managed trail.
