I guess it's hard to be thrilled with the "beautiful campus" when tuition there can cost over $45K per year, if not more.
I’m a TCU grad as well, and I believe that TCU’s and SMU’s endowments are about the same. TCU passed a billion quite some time ago.

Rice is at $858K, SMU at $160K, and Baylor at $71K. So Rice could theoretically use all of its endowment income to pay all its students' tuition bill, every year.

But then this article has data about the average family income of students at each U:

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...bottom-60.html

SMU: $199K
Rice: $161K
Baylor: $128K

They typically argue, "we don't want to cut our tuition when so many of our students are so affluent" (not in so many words), but I don't think that is going to be a defensible position in the long run...
Rice recently announced some extremely generous changes to their financial aid to make it free for everyone with family income lower than $130K, sometimes even higher if family has many students in colleges, has high debt or other difficult circumstances . It’s similar to Harvard now.

You are right. TCU’s endowment is 1.5 Billion$. They have almost 11,000 students so good ratio per student, about 150k.

Out of curiosity I went and looked up all of them: below

TCU $1.6 billion
SMU $1.6 billion
Baylor $1.31 billion
Rice $5.8 billion

Compared to the big boys:
Duke $6 billion
Northwestern $7.1 billion
UT System $7.4 billion
M.I.T. $15 billion
Stanford $17 billion
Princeton $25.9 billion
Yale $29.4 billion
Harvard $37.1 billion

I think the number for the UT System is low, it might be the value of the UT endowment, which is separate from the PUF. Currently the PUF is roughly 22 billion and 2/3 is earmarked for the UT System and 1/3 for the A&M System.

Just double checked, and it looks like UTIMCO (which manages the PUF) has close to 45 billion under management, and 35 of that is for the UT System.

you might be right there. I didn't look to closely at what part of the UT system that number represented.

What is the point of comparing a school like TCU with Harvard which is one of the oldest, most recognized and influential university in the US with a global profile??

I am surprised that Rice has a larger endowment than SMU because I expected that SMU would because of its history of catering to a wealthier clientele vs Rice which is geared to intellectually rigorous vs just wealthy

After his murder as part of his will William Marshall Rice gifted Rice with several million dollars in 1900. I don't recall the number but Rice instantly had a top-10 endowment nationwide. I think that explains much of Rice's endowment advantage.

SMU is no slouch either - there are only about 30 private schools with $1BB and up endowments.

That UT System number isn't complete.

Texas A&M $10.48 billion
Texas $24 - $28 billion depending upon the source.
