Hi,

We arrive for a 15 day trip next week. We start from Houston to drive to Big Bend NP via Bandera.
For a fisrt stop, I would like to stay in an hotel in Gonzales because it is at 2 hours and half from Houston.
Is it a great city for a stop ? Is there anything to visit ? How is the landscape ?
If not, where could we stop on the way to Bandera (next step) ?

And after Bandera, where di you recommend to stop again ?

Taking in mind that I perfer to stay in some small authentic towns because I am a country girl !

What highways are you taking? That would help us give recommendations.

Hmmm. I'd make a straight shoot to Bandera from Houston (but, then, I'm a Texas gal, I've been known to drive from Austin to Houston and back for a day of lunch and shopping , and when we go to New Mexico we drive from Austin pretty much to the border).

Or at least go all the way to San Antonio. If you must stop short, go a little further and stop in Seguin.

If you're going to Gonzales from Houston, you'll be taking I10, by the way.

My favourite would be to the NE of San Antonio- Ye Kendall Inn in Boerne.

Ye Kendall Inn - Historic Hill Country Inn - Established in 1859, Boerne, TX (broken link)

It is not far from Bandera.

But you have a very long drive to Big Bend.

Just make sure you gas up when you get to a quarter of a tank. You'll want to stop in either Sonora or Fort Stockton, and it depends on which route you take off I-10. Services are few and far between in West Texas. It's real isolated in Big Bend, so you'll want to have enough in the tank.

Those areas on the map where you see no towns--trust me, there are no towns. Even where the map says there are towns, there's not much "town" about them. It's very isolated out there, and there is not much to do at all, unless you plan on being outdoors getting back to nature, and that's what you enjoy. There are stretches out there where you can't even find a bag of chips to eat, let alone a meal. Yuk!

I'm done with West Texas.

Roflol, I drive 80mph on I-127 (MI), like all the time, and people pass me.

Definately stop in New Braunfels and go to the Shlit...Schlit...I dunno, the Shliterbuan? However you spell it. Most amazing water park ever.
