I am rapidly nearing retirement age and starting to weigh my choices of where my wife and I may move once retired.

I currently live in the Houston suburbs and while the area has been nice for finding work and great schools, we have decided to move to where the pace of daily life is a lot slower and the air is cleaner.

We both love the areas between Bastrop and Katy (Washington, Austin, Fayette, and Bastrop counties). Some of the cities/towns in that are nice but so small and remote. I think whichever place we land should have at least grocery stores, be within 20 minutes of a hospital, a few restaurants and affordable housing.

I am open to all opinions on best places to retire or places to avoid in this area.

Thank you

I personally LOVE the College Station area. But, sounds like you want something more remote

We are looking more at the Hill Country, which is almost cliche but for some good reasons. Kerrville is close to some excellent medical facilities and Fredericksburg is not too bad now. I would stretch the distance to 30 minutes, though, to get to some more options. Llano, Burnet, Johnson City, et al.

I would never willingly be admitted to Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville. Ever.

I think we would like to stay below $250K for an older 2+Bed/2+Bath.
I have researched available houses and that's not really an issue. It more avoiding isolation and finding a friendly town.

I'll dive a couple of hours the few times I want or need to visit a big city but I also want more choices than Dairy Queen or Whataburger for dining out!

I am not an aggie, but it's really all the alumi swarming the city that I would rather avoid.
I have always lived near touristy area, am I over the weekend and summer crowds

Have you considered Dripping Springs? My husband and I really like that town.
