I have lived here in Texas for 2 years now.
I have seen probably a hundred armadillos, all of them in various states of splatter across the state's highways and roads.

I've seen splattered gators, and living gators.
I've seen splattered turtles, and living turtles.
I've seen splattered skunk, possum, coon, and I've seen living versions.
I've seen splattered armadillo and ... no living ones! I want to know the truth... Are there any real armadillos?

If it weren't for that Clash video for "Rock the Casbah" I don't think I've ever seen a living armadillo.

Mostly I'm just sort of joking, but honestly, are they nocturnal, or shy? what?

They're mostly nocturnal. We had one in our front yard when we first moved into our neighborhood and I just about hit one driving on I-35 from DFW to Oklahoma City one night. You don't usually see them until you've already driven over them.

They're slow movers but they're best left alone because
a) they have sharp claws
and
b) they carry the bacteria that causes leprosy

Come to my backyard at night. They dug our yard to bits, but we finally have convinced them to try another yard.

When I was younger we used to run around the woods at night and kick them like footballs.

I've only seen a live Armadillo once. I was down in the Abilene State Park, about 12 miles south of Abilene, and I was walking down a path in the park just before nightfall. He was digging a hole or something over near some bushes and as soon as he saw me he ran away. All the others I've seen have been road kill.

You know... I don't think I've ever seen a living armadillo either. I've never given this any consideration before, but that is indeed very odd.

I've seen them walking around during the day over near Enchanted Rock and down by Rockport.

Check out this thread, this home owner who recently moved to Round Rock found them burrowing under his foundation, and has trapped 7 so far in the process of trying to relocate them.

I saw a live one in Florida.

Mrs Jezer rose me from my sleep, when we were staying right by the beach on Sanibel Island, by shouting 'Armadillo!'

As I was half awake I shouted back 'You're a what?'
