My African American son who is 32 yrs old has been selected for a food Inspector job by the Federal government and was offered as a first choice in Waco, Texas. Though he is not well traveled, he has been to Austin, Texas which is not Waco. A few years ago he was thriving in New York's restaurant and food business. Has been a restarant manager and worked in the airpork (JFK) for huge food distributors, he wants to get back in the food industry. I've told him Waco Texas is the last place he should consider, it is rural and he will probaly only have correctional facilities or farms to work in. I told him it is not bustling city with diversity and median income is low.

Was I wrong? Anyone can shed some light on Waco? Iknow about Waco because of David Korish. Thank You

You are spot on. Waco doesn't have electricity, running water or motor vehicles. Very backwards place. All the citizens living there are exactly the same and are completely uneducated. No tolerance and diversity exists. Yes, truely, Texas is stuck in the early 1800's. Your son will surely perish if he leaves NY city, where there is nothing but love for your fellow man and opportunities galore.

Okay, now that I've got eveyone riled up, let me suggest that your son visit Waco and see for himself. Perhaps you could come, too. Waco is not a metropolitan area. It is a conservative city of about 100k people of all races who have the same cares and concernes as most folks. Take off your ill-informed glasses and see the world.

You really need to come see Waco. In fact, you need to come and see Texas. What your son will find are friendly people and lots of opportunities for success and a fantastic life. We've got it all. And Waco's location is great, and job opportunities are greater than they've ever had, as our state's economy is better than most states (there are incredible opportunities in the food industry here). The weather is second to none. And your son will love the food down here, too.

Try it. I promise you, your son will not regret it.

I think you should let your son make up his mind for himself and do the checking. He isn't 18 and just beginning adulthood. He is full-grown.

Don't let that incident there with David K. confuse you as to what WACO is about. Waco is a very nice city. Heck I would even consider living there, but I am a beach kinda guy.. and thats the only thing keeping me from considering Waco as a place to live. I think you should listen to the many people above me.. visit and get to know WACO.. its a great place to work, live, and play.

Probably the biggest inaccuracy of your statement is about diversity. From city-data's Waco web page, Waco is 51% white, non-hispanic and then 23 and 22% hispanic and black, respectively. Of course, there are more elements to diversity than race but that is a big indicator. Baylor's nickname of Sodom on the Brazos might be an indicator of other types of diversity, I don't know.

Really, does that mean it has a high gay population? When I lived there we called it Jerusalem on the Brazos.

it's really sad that so many still identify Waco with Branch Dividians...kinda likeJasper with the big racial hate crime.....
people must realize that they are isolated incidents, and shouldnt paint the town..

I have lived all over the great state of Texas, and I can honestly tell you Waco is one of the best places for your son to go to if he's looking for diversity, and some very friendly people. Granted, it's certainly not a sprawling metropolis, but I cannot see how he could deny anyplace in Texas for New York. I was born and raised here, but I have moved around the world over the past eight years, and I really just want to get back to Waco.

And Dallas with JFK, Ruby, and Oswald. And even J.R. Ewing. Ha!
