The year is 2030, a committee has just been created to determine feasibility of high speed rail in Texas.

And a multi year study is being done to assess the need for a fourth lane each way on I-35.

Trump's Real Estate Deal Making

Trump would like to shorten the land border to save money when he builds the wall.

More likely the border will be redrawn with Texas south of the Nueces going to Mexico and Tamaulipas, Nuevo León and Coahuila reverting to the pre-Texas Revolution boundaries.

Mexico cedes the Baja California peninsula and Sonora and Chihuahua north of the 31st parallel in exchange for the U.S. to build a canal through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and recognition of the lost Mexican states in Central America once it reconquers them. The peninsula will either be a separate state or annexed to California TBD. Arizona will finally have a coast and a coastal city, Puerto Peñasco! It will surpass the Phoenix area in population and be the only seaport for the state.

Texas will lose out (and the Southwestern states gain) since besides losing the RGV, the Big Bend region south of the 31st parallel will go to Chihuahua, and it might be an opportunity to extend New Mexico southward to include the midsized metro of El Paso-Ciudad Juárez (which might be combined into a new El Paso del Norte with the American side)-Las Cruces. (And Beto O'Rourke becomes the junior senator from New Mexico.)

Texas (or Houston) will gain since the new canal will make shipping from Asia and between the coasts much faster than the current Panama Canal. Also there will be less land area and coast for the state to govern and maintain, so the tax burden will lower.

I-69 barely connects the state. Meanwhile the other states have completed their sections and I-49 is continuous all the way to Kansas City. (I have to arrive in Texarkana first though!)
