I was trying to contemplate the better Mid-sized City between the action in Austin and San Antonio...I was curious as to what your thoughts might be.

They're both great. In San Marcos, you have Texas State and everything that goes with that. In New Braunfels, you have tubing down the Guadalupe and German influences. Both are short drives to unique large cities and right next to the Hill Country. Plus, they're right next to each other!

I would say San Marco--your pretty much smack dab in the middle that way. New Braunfels is closer to San Antonio than to Austin.

They are only 5 minutes apart! You can't go wrong either way.

I think they are a bit further apart than 5 minutes, more like 20 minutes.

Depends on your situation. Family? Age? Interests?

If i was in my 20's, then I'd opt for San Marcos.

I lived in NB for 8 years & am contemplating moving back myself (but would never live in San Marcos....although it's nice to visit).

& regarding some of the above comments:

- They're about 10 miles apart. (So 8 min. on I 35 & 20 min. from the County Courthouse to the County Courthouse.)
- Residents of New Braunfels toob the Comal....rarely the Guadalupe.
- Neither city is "smack dab" in the middle....NB is 30 miles from SA, San Marcos is 30 miles from Austin.....smack dab in the middle would be the huge Truck Stop between the cities (or the XXX lingere parlor a few yards down on the west side of 35 )

SM is a growing college town. NB is very popular for retirees but quickly becoming an exurb of San Antonio. They're both pretty nice but SM seems to have a lot more junky looking areas if you're paying attention. I still don't consider them to be a midsize city but I guess that's relative. Both are small towns with a lot of countryside but that will probably change before long.

Yilkes how slow do you drive ?!!!

To the OP they are pretty close to each other, so very easy to drive to the other or San Antonio/Austin if you needed too. Others have explained the feel of the cities.

New Braunfels is almost a suburb of San Antonio now, it has been developed up I-35, quite amazing compared to just a few years ago!!

I guess I drive the speed limit!!! I really thought they were further apart than what others are saying... I stand corrected.
