All I remember about him is the skit/political ad where they were calling him Satan Williams!

I remember that gubernatorial race between him and Ann Richards well. I believe he would have won but his mouth worked before his brain did on too many occasions. The remark about rape really did a number on him even though he made it clear it was a joke Well of course it was a joke and every one knew it although of course the media tried to make it appear he was seriously honest about his remark (not much has changed in the media except they're a lot better at playing their mind games on the public now than they were back then ). But he should have known you can't talk like that and get by with it when running for a public office.

He was one of the 'good ole boys' and hey that's usually a good and a bad mix all at the same time but I liked him. RIP Clayton Williams.

Thanks for posting this C24L.

Years after the event my parents and I encountered good ol’ Claytie in a hotel elevator in San Antonio. The elevator was small so my mom made a comment about whether there was enough space my family to get on it. Clayton Williams was the only one on the elevator. His response was to make a joke about how it was a good thing his wife wasn’t there because then the elevator would be overweight. We had never met him before but as soon as we heard his “joke” we figured out who he was. My dad is a big fan of inappropriate jokes but even he thought that was crossing the line he wasn’t friends with us.
