So let's do a simple thought experiment, and imagine if the US economy had continued chugging along. We would still come to the same place where California and NY are right now, but it would not have been out of choice. It would be because every body would be sick or dead. And lots more people would have died quicker because that 'spike in the curve' would happen far more ferocity. Shutting down the economy is awful, but right now with no immediately available treatments, it is the least awful choice there is.

How are you coming to this conclusion exactly??

I am alone (widow) and have gone to the store once since I chose to self isolate on March 9. I am also over 75 years old. A person has to do what he has to do.

There is a ton of data visualization available right now. You can find all kinds of charts and graphs that show the explosive growth of the virus. It's already bad as it is even with these countermeasures being enacted.

Let's be brutally honest though: dying is kinda what people do when they reach their 70s, 80s and 90s. Elderly people die of all kinds of things. If we shut down the economy for everything that kills elderly people then we wouldn't have an economy. We have put countless people out of work and obliterated many small businesses. We have delayed retirement for millions of people who will have to work several more years to recover from this market collapse. If this continues, our children's education will be impacted. If this continues for months like some suggest, the very fabric of society will begin to fray. And let's be honest - the US isn't exactly a united country on the best of days lately. I don't want people to die, but I also don't think it is worth jeopardizing civilization for people who have already lived full lives.

In general, this whole situation makes no sense to me. To pick this particular disease to make a last stand against is bizarre. Compared to MERS, which had a 40% mortality rate, it is not very lethal. If it mostly killed children and young adults like H1N1 did than the government action we are seeing might make sense. But this hysterical reaction for this particular disease? Something doesn't pass the smell test.
Have you shared this with your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.. or do not have any?

Sick outlook , pun intended..

My social distancing took a break today as I went to groceries stores for more supplies. As I am now well supplied, social distancing will be back in full force.

We just put in an order for HEB curbside service for April 3rd to replenish the perishables.

My personal SD is about 7 yards - I can hit any reasonable target at that distance with my 9mm.

We need to keep it up. It’s going to be worse for Texas in mid to end of April, continued or improved social distancing can keep it to minimum. This is not going to last forever but if we aren’t careful, it will last for longer and do more damage.

We live on acreage in the country; social distancing is our norm. We don't go to town to a store often, and when we do, it's early in the morning, before the crowds show up. So far, we're doing just fine.

More importantly, the vegetable garden is doing fine.
