Where To Buy A Home In Texas? (Houston, Dallas: insurance, find a job)

Hello,

My wife and I have two pre-teen and one teenager and we are considering moving out of crazy CA and moving to Texas. We would like a good safe area with quality schools and lots to do. We are very active. We were considering Houston because it's close to the coast, but we heard that the summers are brutally hot and humid.

If you have any recommendations it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

West Texas is arid, East Texas is humid. Lubbock, Amarillo, or El Paso.

The western section of Houston would be good. Places like Sugarland have incredible high schools with sons/daughters of very highly educated people--physicians, Phd's and engineers. Private schools are not needed in such places.

Maybe North Dallas if Houston is too hot for you. Of course it all depends what you like to do.

Add hurricane risk to the list for Houston. Anywhere on the Texas coast has hurricane potential. West Texas is arid, and hot in the summer. The panhandle gets snow in the winters. Most of the state has high humidity in the summer from winds coming in off the Gulf. The cities all have unique atmospheres. Dallas and Houston are metropolitan, but still have funky spots. Plenty of shopping, dining, culture, etc. Fort Worth is close to Dallas, but has a more small town feel. Austin, long known for it's unique vibe is not the Austin most of us knew from previous decade. Gentrification and migration have made Austin a completely different town. San Antonio has a rich history, with lots to see and do, but depending on the reasons you plan to leave crazy California, the city government may not be to your liking. There are several enclaves, suburbs, and exurbs that are good options.

Do you need to find a job where you'll be living? If so, you might start looking at jobs, and then decide where to live.

Summers are hot all over Texas. If you're looking for cooler weather, you'll have to look at another state.

You do realize that Texas has three of the ten largest cities in the US, another ten or so mid sized cities, and it's a vast area of land, don't you? Any of the medium to large cities has areas that are "a good safe area with quality schools and lots to do", and will also have horrible crime-ridden ghetto areas as well.


If you have to work for a living, you need to consider where you can find a job; get a job, then ask specifically about that city/town. For example, if you specialize in oil well services, you'll do a lot better in Midland than Dallas; if you specialize in predictive data analysis for insurance, it'l be the other way round.

look at central central texas not as humid as Houston or East Tx still close enough for day trips to Austin or Dallas
