My husband just re-enlisted and we are moving to Fort Hood this summer. We have four children with three w/ life-threatening conditions. We are trying to live on-post to save funds until I am able to find suitable employment. I have heard that on-post housing can be a nightmare, as far as the accommodations and waiting list. Can anyone tell me how is on-post housing for a 5 bedroom quarters? i.e. looks and size. I called the housing department on base an was informed that we will either stay in Montague Village or Kouma Village. I tried looking them up on-line and was unsuccessful. I am also concerned about the schools, as although my children have these conditions, they are extremely smart and are currently in either honors courses or gifted classes. I would like for them to continue to be challenged in their academics.

We are moving from Fort Lauderdale, FL. I am extremely scared, as I am a city girl and moving to the country will be culture shock.

well, i would not categorize Killeen as "country". matter of fact, it is so busy that i go back roads to the establishments on 190 when i need to go.
but surprisingly there are some very "country" rural areas in Killeen, on the outskirts-near the airport...e.g. Maxdale, Ding Dong (yes there is such a town and they even have a Ding Dong Volunteer Fire Dept!), all that area around Parrie Haynes ranch (owned by Texas Dept of Wildlife)....
what you will find in Killeen and the surrounding areas of Ft Hood that very military. just about everywhere ya go, you will see ACU's lol..........
lots of transients, naturally. and you will enjoy being part of the Army family.
outside of Ft Hood, in the towns a bit further out, where "civilians" nonmilitary local folk are, you will find the most friendly folks on earth. BIG difference from Ft Lauderdale.

I recently got engaged to my fiance who is in the army and stationed at Fort Hood, I will be moving there some time next year from New Hampshire. I am excited, anxious and nervous all in one. Any advice for a new member of the military family? I am still curious specifically about whether to live on or off post, especially since it is only him and I so when he deploys I will be living alone. Any other tips are very much appreciated. I am finishing up my bachelor's degree in Psychology and Law before I move to Texas and will be looking into working for my master's there. I am proud to be an soldiers girl, HOOAH!!

About your only option for graduate school near Fort Hood will be the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor It's a well-regarded school, but they do not do Law. There are a few other schools, but they are further away, such as Waco, Georgetown, and Stephenville. Some of these do have a law school.

I'd recommend living on post simply because you'll be surrounded by other military folks, and you'll have more access to services and the family support network. The Army really does take care of its own! My husband is an activated Army Reservist, and I've been very pleased with the support while he's been deployed!

by all means, i would live on post....however, there may be a waiting list, but get on it anyway, regardless of how long it is, because things change and ya never know-lots of divorces ya know, so lots drop off the list before their number is even up ha ha....i liked living on post when i was married to a soldier because i felt "secure"-i had an automatic family-neighbors (though off post its almost all military anyway but there is a bit more animosity off post)...and then you have the MP's which made me feel secure, and also quick access to emergency services-you'd be already on post in case of a medical emergency (cant help it, i think like a nurse, which i am).
but even if you live off post, of course you will have "access" to all the services afforded to you as a dependent.
keep in mind, you will need to be married to take advantage of free post housing or BAH money for off post housing. otherwise yall are on your own.
