Both the Wife and I have retired this past year and are looking to move back to Texas from Oklahoma.
We have been gone from the Houston area for the past 12 years and that is the area where we would like to go back to since we have a new grandson that lives in League city. After visiting last week and looking houses, I realized why wanted to leave in the first place. Just too damn busy for me ! LOL well we are now looking at the Magnolia area, Far enough away from the masses but close enough if I ever do need anything. Also the taxes are no that bad either.
Are there any other areas we should be looking at as well?

Magnolia is one the fastest growing areas around Houston.
Woodlands pushing it from one side and coming high speed rails Dallas-Houston from another side

The Patton Village/Splendora area would be a whole lot closer to your grandson, in terms of driving time. Not near as busy as Magnolia area.

Rosenberg is a nice area, too, and also much closer to League City.

Good luck in your search.

If you want the Houston metro area I may be at a loss. I need much more room than I can get in the 'burbs. I like some of the areas north of town between I-45 and US 59/I-69. That's still an hour or so to League City through town.

Magnolia is growing pretty fast and will only grow faster with the addition of the Aggie Tollroad. If you want true peace and quiet in a natural setting similar to that, Id check out the area between New Caney and Coldspring along 59.

Lake Jackson is a cool town, doesn't seem too busy, and near League City. Even better, Ron Paul, maybe the only honest politician our country has had in a long time, lives there.

Dayton has been off the radar mostly, but new housing developments are starting to spring up out that way. One of the fastest routes into Central Houston. Sam Houston Tollway is accessible from there and will take you a good chunk of the way to League City; future Grand Parkway will also.

If you like having robust suburban-style retail and services nearby, however, Dayton has a long way to go. Also, it's close to areas with heavy industrial growth. Some folks don't mind that, others do.

Also, I'm not sure about flood risk in Dayton. Nearby Liberty has serious flood problems with the Trinity River.
