Southern / Southwestern split in Texas is somewhere between I-35 and I-45
There's nothing Southern about Austin or San Antonio

I've been to Austin and I disagree with this. It feels like the South to me.

You are talking about the one city in the region that feels like California

How does it feel like California? Every big city is liberal and has hipsters

How many Californians are moving to Austin? Numbers will surprise you.

I35. Especially near Austin to San Antonio. East of there, flat land, trees, greenery. West of there, rocky soil, less rainfall, rugged terrain, etc.

Much of East Texas could be considered the deep south, and Dallas is a mix of plains/midwest and the south, but west of that to me is either part of the plains region or southwestern to me.

I have no idea why people think Austin feels like California...are they really that poorly traveled? Anything that is liberal and has hipsters is "California"? Have they not been to other State Capitols with flagship universities before?

If Austin "Feels like California" then Nashville, Asheville, Madison, Denver, Boise, Columbus, Seattle, SLC and both Portlands must all feel like "California" So what does that mean...any place that has a good tech scene and a lot of young white people suddenly is "California"?

I mean even California isn't like that...it is much more diverse than Austin.

If someone was hit over the head and dropped into the streets of Austin there is no way they would mistake Austin for any place besides Texas.

Austin is quintessential Texas. You walk around and Texas is in your face everywhere (like in a good way.)

To be fair, whether or not you consider Austin the South or not, Austin is far more Texan than Californian. Whether you call that Texan culture southern or not is subjective.
