When I was living in Texas in the 80s, I ate dinner at Luby's just about every day. The food was very good, the variety excellent, the service quick and the staff was friendly. I can't understand how things deteriorated to the point where they have decided to liquidate the entire chain.

I have never stepped in a Lubys in my life. But Word on the street is that the quality was going down. Looking at their business model, they had the same owners as the people running Pappas restaurants. Clearly this Pappas their number one focus. That often leads to disaster for the secondary brand

I loved to eat at Luby's too, but things started to deteriorate after Pappas took over the management.
The quality, quantity and prices started to change. It took a while till the most devoted patrons turned their back to leave, and then the end was inevitable.

With its famous Luby's Luann Platter, millions of Texans have ordered homestyle food from their famous buffet lines for the last 65 years.
Texas just won't be the same without it.

I hate to hear that. We always looked forward to getting lunch at a Luby's while on the road in Texas.

Yes, we been knew Luby's would be closing (eventually).

From September 2020:

Luby’s board votes to liquidate, dissolve 73-year-old Texas institution, Fuddruckers

Are there any cafeteria chains left in TX? Furr's, Morrison's, Piccadilly, Highland Park are they closed too?
Where do people eat now, MacDonald's?

Wonderful memories were made at Lubys.
Born and raised in S.A. and eating there in the 70's was one the highlights of my childhood .
It meant it was payday for my parents and we could " dine" out!!
The food was outstanding at one time and something to look forward to.
Had a roommate in the 90's who was in their Manager Training program for a year. He worked like a dawg, with long hours 7 days a week!
He'd come home and re create some of their sides!

We moved to Dallas in early 2000 and began to see the company flailing. Still ate there, but it definitely was not the same.

Sorry to see this institution leave, it was my favorite place to eat back in the day.
My favorite location was North Star Mall, and the downtown location.
Great memories!

I can’t speak for Texas but in Houston we will no longer have Piccadilly, Furr’s, or Luby’s. I believe Piccadilly restaurants still exist in Louisiana (used to stop on the way to Florida).

I guess it’s just a change in “the times?” I have many memories of eating with my parents at Piccadilly in Northline Mall. I remember the long lines after church on Sunday, and I can still hear the clanging of silverware and families chattering. That eventually closed and we migrated to Luby’s.

The chains are gone but for now Cleburne Cafeteria on Bissonnet is the lone survivor. It’s burned down at least once but was rebuilt. It’s really good. Hopefully it will survive.

Goodbye Luby’s.
