Well, my parents and I have contemplated moving to Texas (more specifically Godley) and my father still needs convincing. He has told us that for him to move to Texas, he also needs his friend's family to move as well. As you can see, I am stuck with the job of convincing him and his friend to move.

Any good reason why we should move to Texas?

How funny! My dad was the one who wanted all of our family to move to TX from CA 28 years ago. My sister already lived here with her hubby and kids, and he thought it would be nice for all of us to be together. My husband agreed, so we did it.

Dad had never even been here but because my mom and I plus my husband always said good things, usually referring to the visits in general, he just figured it was A-okay. Well, until the day he died, he cursed this place.

He absolutely abhorred the long, hot, and humid summers, and so do I. He liked to putter in the yard and garage and it was something it couldn't do very often, maybe before 9 a.m. and after 8 p.m.

I don't know where you're from so there may be very many good reasons why Texas would be a good choice to live, but from what my dad was used to in CA and the wonderful weather, he was not pleased.

Property taxes are quite high even in a small town like Godley of less than 1,000 people. That area isn't pretty, very flat and barren (my opinion). I wouldn't want to listen to the trains on the track either.

The property taxes in Godley are about $14.71 per $1,000 of home value. I live in a small town as well about 40 miles south of Godley but not as small as it is. My taxes are $15.79, ridiculous.

Of course, housing prices are less than a lot of places in the U.S. but where I live, they've gone up quite a bit.

If you're not used to tornadoes, you may not like it either.

There is much trouble with illegal immigrants in Texas as well.

Sales tax for Godley is 8.3%.

Utilties in Texas are quite high as a nation overall.

I'm sure you know all of what I said since you're considering the move and like I said, where you live now may very well be worse and good reason to move on.

Fall is lovely, Winter is short-lived, and Spring is pretty as well although the humidity starts then and doesn't end until about mid-October.

There isn't a state income tax, so that's good but trust me, it's made up elsewhere.

Good luck.

Sorry neuterman.......I got way off your question. bellestaroftexas' answer for you is really all your dad needs to know. Again, my apologies.

No problem, thanks for your insight .
We're from Washington, and we're actually pretty sick of the rain and hills. We were in Texas in November when we experienced a rather scary storm, but we managed to survive. But as far as my father is concerned, having a large storm in a brick house every once in a while is better than rain every three days.

The sales tax isn't too bad, I think WA's is around 8% right now. The housing is pretty cheap compared to up here too.

Washington seems to be having some problems with illegal immigrants as well as a large homeless problem. The complex in which my father works has head several "smash and runs" and we have a decent idea as to who did it (if you catch my drift). We also have a large drug problem, marijuana seems to be available on every street corner. It's rather sickening after awhile.

But about the immigrant problem... As long as they know we carry guns it's no problem for us right .

Thanks again

Wow! I think WA state is gorgeous and would love to see hills every day. I have a friend in Woodland that is always trying to talk me into moving there but because of so many gloomy days, it isn't a consideration. I'm thinking about moving to VA.

I guess no place is perfect but if you're used to WA climate, you may want to try out the summer here before you move. It can be most unbearable.

We had some tornadic storms yesterday and usually November and December aren't the months for the worst of them although they can happen any time, obviously. March through June are the months where they can be the most severe.

In 2005, 5.4% of the people in Godley claimed Hispanic ethnicity and whether they're illegal or not, I don't know. Cleburne claimed 19.8% and that's the largest city nearest Godley in Johnson County.

About guns and illegals, I have no idea. I work for a school district and many of the children of illegals are wonderful kids. They really want to learn and have family values whereas some of the other races do not.

Good luck!!

I can't really help with Godley, we did see Cleburne and I thought that area was pretty nice looking - this was about 7 yrs ago though and I'm sure there have been changes. I think its nice that you all would like to be near each other though..I can see that happening with our family too.

amjb - I like reading all the specifics of a place, good and bad. We're still deciding the "where" so I'm reading as much as I can on these boards. You made me chuckle with your comment about not liking the sound of trains, we're the opposite - we love hearing trains rolling by and in our neck of the woods the freight trains stop traffic fairly often. My youngest has been known to get out of the car to get the "full effect" of the experience..lol
My dad worked for the RR and we've taken a few long trips - probably explains our fondness. Now, I've run on...your remarks just brought home how much the details of what a person likes/dislikes about an area can vary.

So true, cm729. The older I get, the less I like noises.

Take care, and good luck on your search as well.
