Okay, except for Central Texas (where I've lived for the past going on 40 years), I haven't spent enough time in West Texas or the Panhandle to know. Thought it might be something local to those areas, actually, for that reason.

I actually hear both here in SCNM and in WT/CT/PH......("own" and "awn")....I bet if you really listen, you'll hear both in CT as well.

HOWEVER.....with the influx of out-of-staters there, you're likely to hear just about anything! Accents are becoming less distinct over time, I think, since people from all over are in TX and NM.
