We are moving back to Texas after having been gone for almost 20 years. We have lived in Houston and Dallas suburbs.

We lived in Cincinnati for many years in an area called "Hyde Park" that had its own 'town square' with shops, etc. Everything was within walking distance, homes were older and smaller. Hyde P felt like a small town in the big city of Cincinnati. We are looking for a similar type of community in Texas.

What larger Texas towns/cities have these smaller communities within the city that have a small town feel? Looking for suggestions. Thanks very much, Linda

Hi there I lived outside Cinci on the Indiana side but had friends that lived in Hyde Park. I am from Dallas in the beginning but now reside in San Antonio. I don't think you are going to get that Hyde Park feel down here simply because of the nature of Texas towns and cities. I would say the closest you might find in the San Antonio area is going to be Alamo Heights/Terrell Hills/ Olmos Park and even those smaller twons within SA city limits you are still going to have to drive some. In fact all of the smaller towns that might have the things that I know Hyde park has require some amount of driving. You mgiht try the Woodlands over in the Houston area but once again Texas has planned for you to drive and not walk.

Try Austin or San Antonio, even Corpus Christi, but they're all growing so fast, with rising prices and traffic and crime. Perhaps Galveston or Victoria?

My experience in Ft. Worth, Texas, Tarrant County is that several municipalities on the west side have just that. White Settlement with an excellent Police Dept. and school system is certainly one. River Oaks, Saginaw, all cities surrounded by the giant city (growing), but still the best big city in Texas. I've been here 38 years. Even the small towns in urban Tarrant County near the city.

The Lakewood area of Dallas is like a small town. Many call it "Mayberry with Money" but we have all levels of income and net worth. We have many generations here since the before the 1920s and many have had the same teachers, etc..we also have our own lake, White Rock, and we are very close to downtown.

This is a good site to learn about Lakewood: Lakewood-Now.net - Dallas Texas - online community newspaper (http://lakewood-now.net - broken link)

Default big city, small town

The Bryan College Station area is the best. Good schools, low crime, in between the major metros. Great for young families. There are alot of small towns minutes away from town.

Seabrook and League City have a small town feel to them, particularly Seabrook. Residents are close-knit and seem to look out for one another whether they know each other or not.
