Senator Whitmore will be a valuable ally in the fight to open up PUF funding to the other university systems in the state. He almost single handedly stopped UT’s encroachment into UH territory. Once the bills are introduced to the legislature, you will see what a fierce ally of UH he really is.

Doubtful, UT and A&M will get what they want. Too much influence and power.

It’s easy to be powerful when every move you make goes unchallenged. There is no justifiable reason for west Texas oil monies to be reserved for only two of the states six university systems. There’s a reason UT has more faculty with membership in the National Academy of Sciences than any other public in the state. The PUF allows Texas to pay for such faculty. The time has come to even the playing field and, it will happen because there’s no good reason for it not to.

The UT & A&M should have never been granted complete control over higher education to begin with. They both collectively keep other institution in the state down, including those in their own system. UT is doing everything in its power to ensure UTD doesn’t outshine the flagship university down in Austin. Folks bark about Texas only having two elite state institutions, well yeah because Texas & TAMU want to be the only ones.

Very salient points. I think UTD already boasts a higher SAT profile than the flagship in Austin.

The state of Texas just approved 14.2 billion for higher ed in the last session, which is about 14% of its budget. California, with nine million more residents than Texas, spent 48 billion, equitably distributed among the state’s system. That’s why California Santa Cruz (the state’s newest AAU member)has more active National Academy of Science faculty than any school in Texas. (yet another example of UT and A&M doing less with more).

Can you imagine how much better higher ed in Texas would be if we had an equitable distribution of state all funds?
