Hamilton or San Angelo come to mind if you like rodeos.

West Texas in general is a great place to see rodeos.

I lived in San Angelo for 7 years back in the 1990s, and I never found anywhere that offered public rides or lessons. There are only a few rodeos a year in San Angelo (Stock Show, Roping Fiesta, etc.) Abilene has several, including the West Texas Fair & Rodeo, and Western Heritage Classic, but it is 1.5 hour drive.

A quick google of Stephenville shows several stables that offer both public rides and lessons. Stephenville also has the highest per-capita membership of the ProRodeo Cowboys' Association, and Tarleton State University's college rodeo team, too. There are numerous large arenas in the area that host shows, rodeos, barrel races, etc. You're also only 1.5 hours from Fort Worth which hosts the FWSSR every year. In 2020, the PRCA held the National Finals Rodeo in Arlington, and rumor is that when their contract with Las Vegas expires in a few years, they would love to come back to Texas!

Wow... even small towns are getting that expensive? I remember in 2012 I rented 1BR in Houston for $750 inside 610 loop, pretty convenient area. And very close to the biggest rodeo in Texas. Few miles from horse ranch where you can take lessons. There are horses even around Houston. I guess for $900 it is still possible to find something in Houston... Back in 2017 it was possible. Hard to believe not in Bandera...

Under $900 in Houston: good location, close to the rodeo.

If you want something more remote, look at Rosharon TX or Alvin TX. Rural or semi-rural and close to the city.

Ha! I could nearly rent you my 20-acre farm with barns near Lubbock for $900 a month.

Seriously though I would recommend Lubbock (farming town) or Amarillo (ranching town.) Many of the small towns around both cities still have rodeos and Saturday night jamborees although much can still be said of much of small town Texas.

BTW. If you want to learn to ride bulls, I have a nephew who will teach you every chord of that music.
