i have usually just carried shotguns and rifles in my truck but recently started target shooting with my new cowboy action pistol so i have been taking it to the ranch and home. i have been told as long as it is not "hidden"...so i keep it on the passenger seat of my truck.
i just emailed my ex, who is a Game Warden, just to make sure.....
and of course, i make sure i LEAVE any firearms at home if i drive on post (federal installation).

i just got the answer from my game warden. you can keep the pistol in your vehicle as long as it is concealed e.g. on front passenger seat with a coat/jacket/blanket over it.
he also referred me to the updated Texas Penal Code link:

Go ahead and get the CHL, then carry your sidearm with you.

There's nothing like getting assaulted in Dallas when your gun is in the car 100' away. Don't ask me how I know this.

How about not going wherever it is you feel like you need protection to do so?

I also second getting the CHL. Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Actually, all anyone has to do is go to any gun store to ascertain all the facts about guns, license's, forms and the current state law and you local city ordinances. They are experts, sometimes retired policemen or licensed gun instructors.

In Texas a concealed hand gun license is required, but before getting one you have to attend a one day course, which is provided by some gun stores as well.

You do not need a license to carry in your restaurant if you own it or have been given permission by the owner.

since we are reopening a 4 year old thread.

I would not rely on gun store employees for legal advice. And im sorry but very few police know the gun laws very well.

One can safely say that some police officers are ignorant of different laws.

Case in point - during the Open Carry demonstrations near the Capitol months ago, APD officers falsely arrested a couple of the demonstrators for openly carrying cap & ball handguns in holsters.
There is no law against that in Texas, as C&B guns are not regarded as firearms. Even the BATFE does not classify them as firearms (or any gun made prior to 1989). Anyone can buy one online and have it delivered directly to their home without the Federal 4473 paperwork & background check.
However, discharging them in the city limits is another matter.
