Like inflation? Get ready for more of it, thanks to Abbott’s attempt to look tough on border

Instead, Abbott found one more bad idea to take from Huffines’ failed campaign: crippling trade with Mexico in the name of being tough on illegal immigration and border security.

The governor’s order to have the Department of Public Safety inspect trucks coming in from Mexico immediately slowed business with Texas’ biggest trading partner. Drivers immediately complained of hours added to their cross-border trips. Some launched protest blockades at the Pharr international bridge and other areas, and producers were already feeling the pinch Wednesday. The governor relented a little, reaching a deal with some of his Mexican counterparts for trucks coming into Laredo to move quicker, thanks to checkpoints on the Mexican side. But the slowdowns in the rest of the state appear likely to continue.

With Abbott’s trucking order. DPS resources are pulled away from keeping highways and communities safe. Truckers, already squeezed by higher fuel costs, must waste even more while waiting for inspection. And if a refrigerated truck runs out of diesel in line, its food products are compromised. What does the governor think that kind of thing does to prices at the grocery store?
The pain will ultimately trickle down to the consumer. Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, no soft-on-borders liberal, decried Abbott’s action, warning that Texans could quickly see $5 avocados, among other rapid price increases, as produce is slowed and much more is wasted.

Two points:

1. The diesel in a truck's fuel tanks does not run the reefer unit on the trailer. The two are totally separate systems and they use different types of diesel fuel. And any trucker who is dumb enough to not keep their fuel tank sufficiently full, and runs out, deserves it.

2. Texas is inspecting the trucks due to increased smuggling of drugs in cargo loads by the Mexican cartels. The fentanyl smuggling has become a huge problem. CBP resources alone are not enough, so Texas DPS is joining them.

The Commerce Clause refers to Article 1, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution,

which gives Congress the power “to regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes."

DPS cannot search the cargo. All DPS can do is inspect the truck to check whether it meets safety regulations. There is no reason to subject commercial vehicles to additional inspections. Abbott is a moron.

Basically, Greg Abbott trust mexican officials more than he trust the US government

Gov. Greg Abbott announces deal with a second Mexican governor to halt Texas’ vehicle inspections at the border - April 14th, 2022

Gov. Greg Abbott and Chihuahua Gov. María Eugenia Campos Galván on Thursday announced a deal that will halt the new commercial vehicle inspections at international bridges connecting the two states that have bogged down border commerce — the second such announcement in two days.
Abbott said state troopers will continue inspecting every commercial truck entering Texas from the states of Tamaulipas and Coahuila — which share border crossings with the Rio Grande Valley, Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

He's such a traitor!

But the conservative corporate "mainstream" local media has focused on gaslighting on bond reform and other Democratic issues to cover up Abbott's failures on the Texas-only power grid and other Republican failures. It's been nonstop bond reform since last year's storm and a media blackout on ERCOT self-dealing.

That's only some of them. Other locations still have inspections.

Say what you will about Abbott, but he is just pointing out the utter failure of the most incompetent & useless moron in America and his corrupt handlers to enforce the longstanding laws that are supposed to provide for the security of our borders.
His opponent in the upcoming November election is a total joke and fraud no different than the other crooks in his party.

What Abbott is going is called “political theater”
