Stop and Frisk didn't reduce crime, the assertion that it did is based on using an unsupported correlation as a causation. That's like saying the number of accidents with people riding green bicycles went up so green bicycles cause accidents. Crime had already started to drop in NY when Dinkins was Mayor and it continued to drop, even after the end of stop and frisk.

And of course crime goes down when more people are sent to prison, they can't commit crimes when they are incarcerated but when the cost of imprisonment for one inmate for one year exceeds $12,000 someone has to start thinking about how long we can afford to use prison as a tool to protect the public from all those dangerous car thieves and shoplifters. That is why prison should be reserved for the most dangerous criminals who pose a real threat to the public.

Tackle poverty and inequality to reduce crime, says police chief

Cutting poverty and inequality is the best way to reduce crime, a police chief has said, calling for more money for deprived areas to thwart criminals’ attempts to recruit those left desperate by deprivation.

Cooke, who has started a new role with the inspectorate of constabulary, said that in his experience most criminals, including those committing serious violence, were not inherently bad.

“The best crime prevention is increased opportunity and reduced poverty. That’s the best way to reduce crime. So there needs to be substantial funding into the infrastructure of our inner cities and our more deprived areas
.

Or the inner cities parents need to stay together and make sure their kids go and stay in school and make sure they do their homework and get an education. Having an education where at least young adults can add 2 and 2 and spell their name goes a long way getting that first job. Taxing those of us that made who right the choices for our kids and had parents that did the same for us is NOT the answer it only makes us more and more upset for those who had the opportunities we had and blew it. Alot of people from poverty areas have and continue to be successful. Most of the lower income and so called poverty areas failures are a direct result of the lack of basic education, parent involvement teaching kids and young adults the rewards of hard work, holding them accountable for their actions and giving them confidence to be successful. It's generations of parents who took the easy way out with divorces, left kids with single parents and would rather be a friend to their kids than setting good examples on how to be a productive citizen.

You do realize that some people are single parents and often work 2 jobs to make ends meet? Even with only one job it is difficult to always support your child's success. It not an excuse - it's a reason.

Sorry i dont agree and to many prisons coddle inmates. ITS PRISON and should be a crappy place but the cry babies types like the ACLU and progressive think its should be a resort. Our tax dollars should be directed first for safety and education and everything else needs to go back in the line. The first and most important role of government is protection and security of it citizens. If it cost 20k then pay it. The cost of criminal walking the street and effecting our productivity is a heck of alot more.

I do not believe prison should be a resort.

You need to watch videos by Christina Randall or Damien Echols. Then come back and try to assert that "prisons coddle inmates". That is an utterly ridiculous assumption.

The prison details start at Minute Two.

By the way, Christina Randall is a wife, mother, Christian, and thriver after 3 yrs in prison for a minor offense (ripping a few $ off the shirt of a young woman she was in a girl fight with).

It happens. Many disturbed people in this world will take advantage just like in virginia. That was a major reason Republicans took the governorship in Virginia.

NYC was wild wild west before stop and frisk. In busy areas there was always some drug dealers, panhandlers, squeegee guys or muggers around. Criminals aren't stupid they know when they can push the envelope and get away without any heat. Guliani worked miracles and cleaned that crap up. But look at it now. Can't even go in the subway anymore. It's way too dangerous now. And tons of homeless, even sleeping on the streets. Can't even go to Washington Square park anymore. Too many crazies there on drugs now.
