President Joe Biden is reportedly seeking to revive a project that would construct a high-speed railway from Houston to Dallas in Texas utilizing Japanese bullet trains.
White House is looking to make an announcement on the project following talks between Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Washington, D.C., this week.

Nothing seems to have come of this. The Prime Minister's visit has come and gone, the joint statement has been issued. No mention of bullet trains, high-speed rail, or Texas.

While they certainly helped kill the original proposal in the 1990s, when they had hourly flights, I'm not sure they view the HOU-DAL corridor the same way now.

What happened with the Amtrak proposal to purchase and operate the line?

Well, they certainly haven't been very public about opposition, unlike previously. Are you implying that they're throwing a lot of $ around behind the scenes?

If it is a system that has stops in a few intermediate metros (Waco, CS-B, etc.) it will have more impact than just, say, a Houston-Dallas connection with no stops. I don't think that will have much impact at all. I'm not opposed to having it, in principle - but am skeptical of having it funded primarily publicly. Is it going to accommodate or induce a lot of beneficial travel that isn't being accommodated by air and highway travel? Is the emissions argument sufficient on its own?

Ideally, it would also connect easily to DFW and IAH airports. It's not uncommon in Europe to have HSR stations at global-level airports like Schiphol, CDG, etc. That actually elevates its usefulness substantially, because then secondary metros served by HSR are also more globally connected. Even Austin and San Antonio might benefit in that scenario (assuming a TX Triangle HSR system) to the extent that it mitigates the limitations of their commercial air service, which is an ongoing complaint in both places. I think this kind of system is way more justifiable for public spending than a single city pair with zero secondary stops.

It was just a proposal. This is Biden stepping in saying it’s a priority infrastructure project.

Elections are coming up and Biden is making a final wave of announcements before Election Day. Same as what happens every time a second term is on the horizon (for example, Obama’s master plan with Flint’s water system).
