Hays County Elects 19-Year-Old to Office (felony, high school, salary)

Voters in Hays County (One of the fastest growing counties in the US with a current population of 255,000) elected a 19-year-old kid with absolutely no experience to serve as their next District Clerk. We have become so partisan that we no longer research candidates and just vote for the party and this is exactly what happened in Hays County. A kid with no experience that spent $0 campaigning defeated a District Clerk with 30 years experience because people can’t take the time to actually research candidates. He was voted into office. He sounds ambitious and wants to learn. He also wants to progress to a statewide office someday. Just what is needed, fresh young blood in the system.

I am not sure what the article is more mad at, the kids age or party affiliation.

We vote-in lots of old folks with zero experience. Couple years ago we let let a TV clown run the whole country.

You said it yourself, he will have a staff of 20. I bet that's at least 20 years experience right there.

Also, the kid won a whole race and didn't even spend a penny. He went out and spoke to potential voters; listened to their concerns. He may not have direct experience, but at least he showed that he is attentive to his constituents needs and that he has the leadership skills to run a campaign. I believe that his drive, his connection to the people and hopefully his staff will make him successful at the job.


New ideas are good. Youth and determination is good. And he is the new district clerk, not the new leader of the free world. They will figure things out.

Any idea yet if he really is an R or was doing this as some sort of social experiment?
I know in the DFW area a couple judges run as Rs even though they are truly liberal. They know they'll get votes in certain counties/areas as an R vs a D.

As an aside, is this common outside of Texas where judges have to run with a political party? I just believe a judge should be an impartial judge and not have to side with any political party.

Anyway, the future belongs to the young so give him a chance. The young, with some procedural guidance from experienced staff and mentors, should take a much bigger role in politics and public policy. They’ll be able to take a fresh approach to issues that need an overhaul. I am kind of old, but I am tired of all the political fossils who have a vested interest to maintain the status quo. New blood can be good.
