That partnership is now rooted in Texas, where Bottazzi and Hotez are co-directors of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development in Houston. They also opened the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, where Hotez is dean of the school and Bottazzi associate dean.

The world is fortunate that Bottazzi and Hotez met. But their careers intersecting is less an instance of good luck than it is confirmation that our planet of 8 billion people is smaller than we think and that talent is everywhere we look. The Houston scientists share an unwavering conviction that those with resources have a duty to assist those without, no matter where they live, by preventing disease that perpetuates poverty. This fervor is what drives their vaccine research and advocacy, something that has become more dangerous in the shadow of the anti-vaccine movement.
The Texas Medical Center is truly the crown jewel of the city of Houston and the state of Texas. I went on a guided tour of Rienzi recently. In my party were two couples, one was from Chicago and the other from Atlanta. Both of them were in town for follow up visits to MD Anderson Cancer Center. One man had been cancer free for 10 years. The other was returning for his 6th year. It makes me proud that people come from all over the world to Houston for the world’s most advanced medical treatments.

Kudos to the DMN for their 2022 selection of Texans of the Year.

Great selections. Adding to that above the duo and their team developed and "freeware-d" a covid vaccine intended for use mostly across the third world.

Huge kudos to them and great picks from the DMN. I liked Hotez's line about being aware of a lot of outdated stereotypes about Texans and Texas, and saying that he came here to do big things. Two of today's great minds.

Talent is limited to European and maybe Japan.
Planet-wide, it’s vanishingly rare.

Vaccines for children?

Seriously?
