We are a middle aged couple (not quite ready to retire) who want to relocate to Alpine. We would like to hear more about the area. To learn more about things to do (we like to be busy but not extreme sports). Also about real estate. We are working folks, not rich. Wondering about a small to moderate mobile / manuf home on a small plot of land that we can own. A rental for a year might be okay but only if they will allow me to bring my two dogs (that would allow us to look for a small place to buy). What kind of jobs are available in the area. Thanks!

The Big Bend National Park is in the area, so if you like operating services catering to park visitors, this may be good!

Also, Alpine has a medical center, several schools, and several motel establishments.

??? The Big Bend headquarters is 100 miles from Alpine.

Alpine is undergoing a construction boom,so I expect that there are jobs to coincide with this.Sul Ross U probably has jobs listed.

Yes, but it's all relative in rural Texas

Something that may be "far" in the city is "close" in rural areas.

The speed limits on the roads between Alpine and the park are high for a reason.

Unless it has changed recently it is still 70 mph.As far as I know, only on the interstates can you get to 75 mph.And I have driven the road from Alpine to Study Butte many times. It isn't a road to go 75 on most of the time. And it drops to about 45 when you enter the park.Alpine to Panther Junction, which is where park hdqts. is,is an 1 1/2 hr. drive.

In 2006, the state of Texas raised speed limits to 85 for:
* I-10 between El Paso and Kerrville
* I-20 between the Monahans and the interchange with I-10

Actually it's 80 mph.I had forgotten about this,as I haven't been west in a couple of years. The only roads authorized for 85 mph are parts of the future TTC.But the road from Alpine to Big Bend doesn't fall under either.

Default Thanks Everyone

It's been a while. Drove over four times and decided it was a lovely little vacation spot but not quite the right place for us. Thanks for all the help and
information.

I had thought about that area once as well but with one visit, I knew it wasn't for me either. It just wasn't pretty enough.

Good luck to you on your continued search.
