Hi - I'm a 34 yr old professional female thinking of moving to TX. (I have lived in NYC for the past 7 years, but grew up in Southern GA, and went to grad school for just under 2 yrs at UT Austin.) I loved Austin when I was there, but am somewhat concerned about moving back to a "college town"...What is single life like out there for a 30+ yr old? Would Dallas or San Antonio be a better option? Is it easy to meet people? I have loved my experience in NYC, but am tired of the "rat race" - I'm looking for a place with a slightly lower cost of living, where I can easily meet different types of people and enjoy life a little more.

Thank you!!

i am 43 years old and single here in Ft Hood/ Central Texas (one hour north of Austin). single life here is very good, as long as you like military guys...we have the largest mechanized military installation in the world here.
one of my girlfriends hangs out in Austin, she is about your age, and has a great time down there and is always meeting other singles her age.
i have lived in Ft Worth during one of my single years, and had a great time.
i think both DFW and San Antonio would be just as good, but San Antonio would have a lower cost of living for sure than Dallas. though you can live in the country outside of Ft Worth like i did, very cheaply. (but that's Ft Worth not Dallas...i bet that Dallas doesnt have very inexpensive places to live right outside of the city limits)
but all of the above will have much lower cost of living than NYC!!!

If you're from NYC and southern GA, why wouldn't you consider Houston? I actually think you'd like that best. Austin is still a lot of a college town, and Houston will have the more international/diverse vibe than Dallas. Since you're from NYC. San Antonio, ehhh...

she says she's tired of the rat race....i would think Houston would be just as busy as NYC-i have never been in Houston (except for a short ambulance drive with one of my patients from the airport to the hospital), but from what i saw on the roads there, and from my experience driving through Houston one time on the highways, it was very stressful and scared me to death!

I agree about Houston--too busy! It depends on what you're looking for? An eclectic, liberal, laid back place to kick back? Austin! A more "Texas" feel and laid back? Ft Worth! Dallas and Houston would be more of the same of what you are trying to escape IMO. Not so sure you would like San Antonio.

Definitely go to Dallas. Cost of living is low, homes very affordable, most taxes are voluntary (ie. sales tax, property tax, no state income tax etc.) Several colleges, unemployment isn't super high, lots of jobs, salaries are almost equal to other large metro areas.

and I don't blame you for wanting to get out of the rat race. Some of these people work their butts off just to make ends meet. They'll make 50k+ but all of it will go to cost of living. What a life to live.

NYC is far and away above Houston and Dallas in that sense... they might be "fast" by Texas standards, but nothing compared to NYC.

In my recent experience, Austin's traffic isn't much better than Houston's.
