Wrestling was not even an option in El Paso when I went to school there in the late 70s. May have changed since then though.

All the sports are popular (with exception of Hockey if it even exists), it's just that football is popular to a higher degree.

Not much wrestling, field hockey, or lacrosse, to name a few.

Basketball is second to football and probably includes more students because it is for girls as well as boys.

The answer is "no."

(It is more visible than it used to be - but still not a lot of attention - more so in the cities than small towns as best as I can tell.)

in some areas wrestling IS a big sport--there are even girls' teams
it just depends on the district's ability to fund a coach and location and offer it to students--they have to pay for a bus to drive to matches and subsidize the cost of the sport--
smaller ISDs might not be able to
in my isd--HEB--it has gotten a following...

Ice Hockey has gotten pretty popular in DFW area as well--several of the Mid-Cities ISDs like HEB, Grapevine-Colleyville, Birdville have teams...

Soccer is gaining in popularity for girls and boys since so many kids who started playing it when they were little have gotten to the high school ages...and there are now college scholarships in soccer which promots its popularity

football still rules but there are other sports that can have strong teams

No, I'd say Basketball comes after Football. Track is up there as well.

When I lived in Corpus Christi, baseball was a solid second to football in terms of popularity.

We didn't even have a wrestling team if I remember right, and we're one of the bigger 4A schools in the state. It tended to go Football, Basketball, Baseball.
