NB's 92.1 plays strictly Americana music with great emphasis on TX bands. But you're right....KNBT is VERY low frequency & is heard only from San Marcos to northern parts of San Antonio.
Very good trivia regarding Hannah Storm, who ultimately went on to the big networks.

I grew up in central Texas (Copperas Cove) from 1970 to 1982, and we had KOOV country music, KLBJ (on picked it up on clear nights) and KIXS out of Killeen that played top 40.

Yeah, I remember Lew Dee and Diana from when they were on 98 KOOL when I was a kid.

Can't talk about Lubbock radio without mentioning KRLB (FM99), KSEL (93.7) and KLLL (96.3).

KFJZ 1270 AM in Fort Worth was my favorite station back in the 60s and 70s. Anyone remember the Texas State Network news? I liked KLIF 1190 in Dallas too. Nowadays, I either listen to KLUV 98.7 (oldies), WRR 101.1 (classical) or KSCS 96.1 (country), depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Default Changes In Larger Markets

I remember TSN the way it used to be, with the little electronic blips going to and coming from commercial breaks. That was really cool.

Looking at today, I'm a little dismayed at the shape radio is in today, what with corporate entities changing formats to fit their bottom line rather than the needs and demands of listeners, and laying off so many people, including many on-air personalities. In Houston, there's getting to be even less variety on the airwaves, as now there is no station for oldies rock (107.5 changed from 60s-70s rock/pop to classic rock). KTRH (740) has nearly no local news anymore except for their morning blocs, and KPRC (950) doesn't exist as we know it anymore (well, for now, anyway). And Houston's only AM local news choices now?? KSEV (700) and KNTH (1070). Not a good sign.

And in Dallas, it's the end of an era at KRLD (1080) with Brad Barton being let go after 31 years at the station. He was such a hit with listeners and is best known for Metroplex weather coverage, but that's all over now. And you've also seen some shakeups at a number of your favorite stations in a number of places. The economy has clearly not been kind to the broadcasting industry.

In addition, the Metroplex, Lubbock, and Houston have all added more sports offerings in the last several months.

Sports gal was Hannah Storm. Went onto other (but lesser IMHO) things.

When I was a kid, growing up in Beaumont, Texas we listened to KYKR (95.1; country music), KAYD (97.5; country music), and some various rock stations (which I can't remember their names now). There was also an easy listening that my mother loved to listen to (KQXY- 94.1).

When I spent my teen years in Livingston, Texas we listened to KETX (92.3; country) and KETX (1440 AM; for rock music). We loved country music down there a lot. There were more country stations than there were rock or any other type of music there.

I can't believe that someone remembers me (Gil Nelson/KIKM Announcer - 1976-1984) from the old KIKM, to the exclusion of everyone else on that staff, but thank you, case44, for the nice mention.

I have been out of full time radio for over 15 years. I still maintain a home studio and do some consulting on a limited basis. Since 2002 I have been a Facilitator with Workforce Solutions Texoma and I am looking forward to retirement in the next couple of years.
