Hey there.
We're planning a roadtrip thru TX in January 2009.
We will be starting off in the Houston / Galveston area and will be travelling to Lockhart, continuing to San Antonio from there. After that, we would like to go north to Fredericksburg / Doss and after that we are open for some of your suggestions. The trip needs to end in DFW, as we fly back from there.
So I've been thinking of going further north to Odessa, Lubbock and maybe Amarillo. Where would you advise us to go and spend some time?

I think your trip idea is perfect. You should keep it just like that. Just give us updates when you can.

Amarillo can be snowy and VERY cold in January. Besides, what do you want to see there???

How long is your trip....Texas is BIG... it is a long way from the
Fredericksburg area to Amarillo...if you have the time for all of that...
you will have a lot to see...too bad your trip isn't in the Spring when
all of the bluebonnets are in bloom...it's beautiful in the Hill Country
here that time of year....good luck and have fun...

I-35 to Ranch Road 1434 in Round Rock, go west until you hit Lake Buchanan. Nice scenery there. From the lake you can proceed north/west to your other destinations. Though I will say on that route you have in mind, outside of the hill country the scenic beauty is minimal... especially since you're doing this in the middle of winter. I would suggest the somewhat evergreen Northeast Texas for a winter scenery trip, if time allows.

HowdyHo,

Texas is a great state to visit, it has a lot of everything to see. January may not be the best time to travel (in terms of weather), but it can still be a memorable road trip. You may want to help us out here by telling us your interests. That way we can recommend areas.

You still have plenty of time to send off for you Texas Travel Guide. It's FREE! ! ! Link also provides for INTERNATIONAL delivery. There should be something in there to help you decide where to go.

Palo Duro Canyon, east of Amarillo (the trip to Amarillo would be worth it just to see how big and flat it is. And windy)
Pecos, Texas - Judge Roy Bean
Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico
Thackerville, Ok - Indian Reservation gambling - north of Gainesville/Denton
Fort Worth Stockyards - that'll take about ten minutes

A car trip from DFW to Amarillo is long and not much to see - if you really want to see the Panhandle and the weather is acceptable you might want to fly from DFW to Amarillo (1 hr flight) and spend just a night or two. But the winters can be very cold (we got 24 in. of snow on Christmas Day the first year I lived there.....2000....and it didn't melt til February.) It's unpredictable, tho....just be sure to check before you head up that way.

I agree with GayleTX... Amarillo can be rather harsh in the winter. But do note the word CAN. They also have brief periods of warmth too. Personally, N. Central Texas would be about as far north as I would go in the winter.

If I were you, I would head south after reaching San Antonio. Take a trip to Corpus, go to Padre Island. Perhaps take a quick trip into Mexico, and do some shopping. Texas is a vast state, and there are a billion things and places you can go to. It just depends on your ultimate goals for the trip, I suppose.
