I've lived in NE and SE Texas most of my life and I've never heard of such a thing, and never witnessed it either.

I'm from Nebraska and I worked in a variety of different restaurants ranging from Burger King to a high end steak house and a private country club. The only one that clapped was the steak house and I liked it! I have dropped PLENTY of dishes (it happens now and again when you carry thousands of dishes a month) and I agree with a previous poster that it broke up the akward silence and made me laugh about the accident. I never felt offended, maybe slightly embarassed but less so than I was already for having dropped it. It made light of the situation and everybody moved on.

I've noticed that in Mexican food joints, the waiters often clap when other waiters drop a plate.

I am from south Texas and we do it all the time especially in a wings bar/dive bar/pub. It is in no way considered classless, rude or immature it's really all in good fun. Some of you need to lighten up a bit and not take life so seriously. P.S. If any of y'all ever come down to San Antonio please go to Dick's Last Resort they'll show you a good time.

Moderator cut: off topic Yeah I remember back when I was in the High School cafeteria, we thought it was funny too. Good to know my memory is still intact since I posted the same thing on this thread, a long time ago.

It happens at a lot of places. When I lived in Panama City back in the day when someone dropped a plate or glass people would chime out "Oh Oh, better get MAACO". Might have been just an in town thing but would bring a smile to the person who dropped it

I'm from East Texas - Longview area - and I couldn't imagine anyone clapping outside of school. I don't recall any instances of the situation occurring though.

Hmmm. Why would people applaud at an undesirable event? Name something positive or humorous about someone accidentally dropping a plate. It is to embarrass the worker and make them feel like crap? Or is this a desire to act like stupid adolescents again?

Thankfully, that childish clapping nonsense isn't common around here...

I've never heard of this or seen it. I am from Michigan but have lived a total of 8 years in Texas, both west and southeast.

That would be rude and I wasn't raised like that.
