Just a new poll, y'all!

Backtracking, I can see how nutty it was to start one on Thanksgiving and set it to expire 30 days from now.

Anyway, when do you all consider the Christmas season to really begin? That is to say, when do you start decorating and putting up a tree and lights and all? And start playing Christmas music?

Personally, I always thought of it as beginning Thanksgiving night. Then I can, without guilt, play classic Christmas music on the CD and watch the old movies/shows like "A Christmas Carol" or "Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown"...and my old favorite, the original Dr. Seuss animated version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

I agree with you. Thanksgiving weekend is when 'the season' starts for me! And that's around when all the lights go up around town, too.

I love this time of year...and I am not even christian!

Right on, Stan!

While I realize that -- understandably -- a lot of people "Christmas shop" all year long...there is just something crass and tacky -- IMHO -- for stores and TV ads touting a Christmas theme to start airing the day after the Fourth of July.

Geez. No wonder so many people anymore get turned off by Christmas and think of it as nothing more than a meaningless big business commercialism venture...rather than what -- Christian or not -- should be the "most wonderful time of the year."

I am a Christian and for me it starts when Advent starts. However, if I was a purist, Christmastide starts on Christmas Eve and goes through the feast of the Epiphany in mid-January. I decorate during the first week of Advent and keep my tree and decorations up through Epiphany. LOL, that really works price-wise, too. I get GORGEOUS, expensive live trees at 40-60 percent off!

Hey, don't forget "It's a Wonderful Life!"

I'd say Dec 24. :-)

LOL Yeah, Cathy, I was derilict for not mentioning that one. My sister plays it over and over and over again!

To be honest though, while I LOVE it? Its replay so much has taken away a bit of the original magic. Same as with "A Christmas Story" ("you'll shoot your eye out...! LOL).

But I guess it is all a matter of opinion. As it is, I can watch the Grinch and "A Christmas Carol" (George C. Scott version) over and over again.

But really? The one that also occupies a special place in my heart is the one that doesn't get played much anymore. That is, "A Charlie Brown Christmas."

Maybe it is because fear of "offending" matters more than paying tribute to what Christmas is all about. As it is, I saw it last year -- for the first time in many years -- and had forgotten just how wonderful and beautiful it really was:

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They return to the school auditorium with the tree, only to be verbally castigated by everyone, especially Lucy, about his choice of tree. Second guessing himself, Charlie Brown begins to wonder if he really knows what Christmas is about, loudly asking in despair.

Linus quietly says he can tell him, and walks to center stage to make his point. Under a spotlight, Linus quotes Scripture, particularly the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke, verses 8 through 14:

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Merry Christmas time, y'all!

I like to start playing just a little Christmas music around the middle of November...then lay it on thick starting Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas is a magical time. My mom always made Christmas a very magical time. I've carried that on with my family. Yesterday...we went to see "Four Christmases" and then walked in downtown Grapevine and looked at all the beautiful lights. Even our 23 yr old loves to come home and help us celebrate. (that's saying a lot}

You know what? I am REALLY, REALLY tired of all this not wanting to offend someone---that paragraph is the "reason for the season" and the whole meaning of Christmas. The fact that Christ was probably not born in December is beside the point entirely.

Sorry for the rant, LOL...but it really does bug me.

I can't remember the last time I saw "A Charlie Brown Christmas." Maybe they'll show it this year!

I never get tired of IAWL or Grinch...I catch them every season!

My family has really pared Christmas down to the basics--we have our Christmas dinner at noon and night services at church--we haven't done gifts or even a tree for about 5-8 years. There are no young children, and none of the adults really needs anything.

I actually enjoy the holidays now.

Usually that week of Thanksgiving is when I start feeling it.
