I am a "senior" - a Texas native - thinking of relocating from Colorado to the Dallas Fort Worth area. Work in hospital admissions - 4-1/2 years experience with great references - and am also thinking of going to nursing school. Does anyone have any pros or cons to moving to Dallas-Fort Worth? Any suggestions about how to land a hospital admissions job? Would you recomomend any other area of Texas over Dallas-Fort Worth? Any suggestions for the locations of affordable, but nice, apartments or rentals?

If you will look at the websites of the various hospitals, you will find current job openings listed. I have a friend who started applying for hospital work in Texas while she was still living out of state....there were many jobs open in her field, but she didn't hear from any of the hospitals until she had actually moved to Texas and had a local address and phone number. However, looking over the websites and openings gave her a good idea of where her best possibilities might be.

As for nursing school, you might need to know that until you have been a Texas resident for at least one year (verified by income tax returns, etc) that you will be required to pay out-of-state tuition. However, tuition is very reasonable here, especially in the community/junior colleges and even out of state tuition might be less than regular tuition where you are now.

One of the better RN Programs (and they also have LVN (LPN)) in the state is at Grayson County College, just north of Dallas between Sherman and Denison TX. Small school with excellent record of students who pass their boards the first time. You can become an RN in 2 years, go to work, then you can, if you choose, begin work on a BS in nursing while you work - University of Texas offers the program thru the local college and your employer will pay most of the expenses.

There are also two good hospitals near the college where the students do their clinicals and can usually go to work after graduating. The cost of living in that area is much less than the Dallas area. You might check the website for jobs.....Texoma Medical Center (Denison) and Wilson N. Jones Hospital (Sherman)....TMC has a new campus under construction right now. There is a large new hospital in McKinney (suburb north of Dallas) and a new branch of Baylor Hospital is being built in McKinney.

Best wishes to you.
