My wife and I are thinking hard about moving to texas. We currently live in Pa, and I have a job in Waco if I want to accept. We will have 3 children come time to move next fall/winter. We homeschool our kiddos and are looking for a nice place to settle within a 1/2 hour commute or so into Waco. We would like the community to have a family first attitude and also be close to outdoor activities. We're avid gardeners, and are looking to put our family first everyday. All advice is welcome.

not a Waco expert by any means, heck I have only been to the TSTC for an air show once, that's it. but i live an hour away.
if i were to work in Waco, I would choose to live in Crawford (home of the Western White House-Pres Bush's ranch)..I have been there plenty of times and love the town. Also McGregor or Moody. But then again, I am a country girl and dont like suburbia or city life.

I also like country and to be away from the city although Waco isn't a big city compared to some. I suggest China Spring, Valley Mills, and maybe even West.

NOTAM is right. The McGregor area is nice and seems like population is finding its way in that direction. The Waco area is in the Brazos River run off with nice soil, especially to the north and east. The Brazos runs right thru Waco. Named by the Spaniards, Las Brazas del Dio, the arms of God. Word has it they thought there were at the Colorado when naming the river (near Austin). The Texas Colorado, not the one that runs to CA.

46 miles to the east is Tehuacana, site of an old, now defunct, college. The Tehuacana area has rich black soil.

McGregor is where SpaceX tests its rockets (http://www.wacotrib.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/communities/breakingnews/entries/2008/11/23/massive_rocket_test_shakes_up.html - broken link). There's video included with the link.

AT&T has a call center in McGregor supporting ATT cellular, NYC metro customers.

My work used to take me up to the Waco area. For areas closer in, depending on what direction you like, Hewitt, Woodway and China Spring all seem nice enough. Supposedly China Springs schools are supposed to be good, but if you're homeschooling, it's not an issue.

Farther out, I'll agree that McGregor seems like a nice little town. Crawford's quaint too if you don't mind the whole Bush influence.

Sorry Belle, I'll have to disagree about Moody though. That place just screams "dump" to me. Not a well kept little town.

Thank you posters, this gives us a place to start. What's the ethnic tolerance for the area?

It's a tolerant area. Plus, you'd be close to College towns, which of course, are usually pretty mixed racially.
