Is Texas really as conservative/narrow-minded as people say it is? (Houston: school district, university)

A lot of moderates may find your "I can't stand..." comments a bit entertaining as well, not necessarily in a positive way. I'm definitely not gay, atheist or a hippy. You have your views, I have mine, and it's no skin off my back in the end. But I can't help but conjure up images of the movies Brokeback Mountain and American Beauty, namely the ex-military dad.

Thankfully A&M is still a somewhat highly regarded university in this state. There must still be mostly normal people coming out of there. Most of this state is full of completely normal people as well. To trend-hoppers: Austin isn't the only place to find some sense of normalcy. You can find it in small towns and big cities.

TXAGGIE, people like you are probably the main reason why my wife and I cannot get out of Texas soon enough. There are way too many people like you that outnumber that people here who are actually and genuinely nice, that are liberal (or if they are conservative, they're more "live and let live").

And padcrasher, what's wrong with teaching the Bible as an ELECTIVE? It would be one thing if they mandated it but honestly, the Bible is a really important piece of literature, whether you believe any of it or not, so I don't see any problem with teaching it to kids who want to learn about it in the first place.

The Christian right was at the very heart of the effort to get the course put in place. Just an effort to get their foot in the door so some of their true believers can teach it the right way and hope they don't get caught. What parent would put his family through hell by objecting publicly to a teacher using the course to promote religion in a small rural school for instance? Not many. And these bible thumpers know it.

And what is wrong with it? You're using my tax dollars to promote your religion under the guise of a literature course.

Are you saying that just because the law contains some nice language designed to make it appear like a harmless literature course that people should not be concerned?

Let's look how Texas has dealt with the issue in the past

"Research by Southern Methodist University professor Mark Chancey found that 22 out of 25 Bible courses from Texas public schools in the 2005-2006 school year resembled courses that federal courts had ruled to be in violation of the First Amendment.

"Most Texas courses are textbook examples of the unconstitutional promotion of one religion above others through the public schools," Chancey said.

That's how many Texas school districts treat laws designed to protect separation of Church and State......like a Mexican Stop sign...LOL
