In bad times do people tend to stay in the big city or move out to the suburbs for cheaper living and just commute?

suburbs are typically more upscale and a lot more expensive than within a city.

Not always. The most expensive places in Houston are not far from downtown. As are some of the crappiest places. Some dumps are worth as much as a nice house in the suburbs because of the land. The lot is worth $190k and the house is worth $10k sometimes.

Suburbs are generally family oriented. Inner city is not so much, unless you can afford the best places, and maybe private school.

I am talkin about the majority of the time though.... The only time private property is more expensive within a city rather than the suburbs is when you either:

A. Live in a condo
B. Reside in a famous/historic neighborhood
or
C. Live in a prime location to all necessities and/or featuristic areas of a city.

Other than that, suburbs are typically pricier.

In the Dallas area, most of the suburbs are as big as Dallas so it's all one huge place.
