I grew up in Texas and never did this. Imagine my surprise when I enrolled my Kindergarteners last month (we just moved back) and I heard this on announcements. Now, I love me some Texas and I love our flag, but what is UP with that???
I think all Texas school kids also have to take a semester or is it a year of Texas history. I am sure I will get flamed for this comment but IMHO I think Texas history should be offered as an elective only. A lot of my teacher friends in Texas were not keen on teaching the Texas history course and they said most the kids did not take the course seriously. Seems like the time could be better spent learning about American or world history.

You get used to the heat and humidity, its definitely better in Austin than Houston, my kids will probably grow up without ever making a snowman!

I know plenty of people (in real life) who can't wait to leave. Most of these people are native Texans.

Me? Well, if it weren't for the majority of family and friends living here, I don't think I'd have a problem leaving, either.

I don't have much of a Texas bias. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong state, or perhaps just the wrong part of the state.

No not everyone gets used to the heat and humidity. I am a native Texan and have never gotten used to it. I HATE living in Texas.

I like Texas, but I want to leave every year about August, when the heat and humidity seem endless and the air is stagnant here in Ft Worth. That first cool fromt in autumn sure does feel great, though! I loved summer when I was a kid, but I'm 62 now and I can hardly wait until fall already.

At 62, I would think you could be do some traveling to get away. I would check out Montana, Oregon, Washington State, in the summer and fall time. I hate Texas yearround however. Im In AZ, feeling Lazy, dating a girl named Daisy (actually her name is Carrie, which almost rhymes)

I'm waiting for the right moment to move back up North. I'm a Northern person, I love the moderate temperature summers, cool falls with the color changing trees, and cold winters. I love the rain as well. Everything seems so fresh after a rain and not dry, dusty, smoggy like it is currently in San Antonio.

The architecture is a whole lot better in the North. A lot of new urbanist developments building housing in traditional style and developing new downtowns. Here in TX, we've been making strides in improvement, but suburban strip malls and box housing still rule.

I love the food and low cost of living in Texas, but to me, money isn't everything and I can live financially stable up North. It isn't worth it living in a place that I don't care too much of. Besides, you can find great food anywhere.
